20 YEARS AGO, MARCH 25, 1948 A dinner for the Milford Trojans who played in the regional tourney game at Fort Wayne was given Monday evening in the Oldenburg Inn, south of South Bend, by a number of enthusiastic fans. Mr. and Mrs. Dan Levemier are the parents of a daughter, Debra Ann, bom in the Goshen hospital Friday, March 19. Dr. and Mrs. Dan C. Moore of Seattle, Wash., are the parents of a daughter, Nancy Elizabeth, bom Saturday. Mrs. Katie Stoller of Milford is the infant’s greatgrandmother. The seniors have started practicing on their play, “A Little Honey”, which will be given on April 16. Those in the play are as follows: Ann Anglin, Guy Zimmerman, Darlene Neff, Barbara - Replogle, Marilyn Myers, Junior Lechlitner, Edith Beer, Kate Bretherick, Robert Geiger, Betty Smith, Kate Yoder, and Frank Scott. Mr. and Mrs. George Haab and Mr. end Mrs. Fred Haab went to Nappanee Sunday to see Mrs. Lornie Miller, who has been very ill. Her condition is improving. Herbert Baumgartner, who was injured while with the Milford firemen who were fighting the fire at the Taylor home in Milford Junction on the night of March 13, is considerably improved, but when X-rays were taken of his hand last Saturday it was discovered that the ring finger of his left hand was broken. 30 YEARS AGO, MARCH 24, 1938 The golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mhs. Jacob B. Neff was observed Friday evening at th'' Bethel church before a large crowd of friends and relatives. A marriage license was issued to Merrill Vanderveer of near Milford and Ruth Markley of Nappanee. Esta L. Yocum, who was successful in a civil service, examination taken several weeks ago, has received appointment as a senior accountant and will report to Indianapolis next week to take up his duties. A daughter, Judith Kathleen, was bora Thursday afternoon to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Godschalk of near North Webster. Candidates who have filed their candidacies during the last week are Mace Hollar; Democrat, for trustee of Jefferson township, and Arden Geyer, Republican, for committeeman of first precinct, Van Buren township. Wade Mishler, who is employed by C. R. Brittsan, will enter the Indiana College of Embalming this fall where he will complete a full course in embalming. Mrs. Charles Harlan entertained at dinner Sunday in honor of the birthday of her son Fred which occurred March 20, and that of his wife. Other guests were C. V. Kerlin of Goshen and Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Groves and daughter, Miss Dorothea Groves. The marriage of Miss Lena Ruch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ruch of Milford, and David C. Beer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joel Beer of Mansfield, Ohio, took place Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Noble Neff. 40 YEARS AGO, MARCH 22, 1928 John Postma, former Milford postmaster and now a teacher in the Milford school, has filed as a candidate for the Democratic, nomination as clerk of the Kosciusko circuit court. Samuel Stookey of Leesburg has entered his name as a candidate for the Republican nomination as commissioner from the northern district. Charles Purdum, a member of the second grade, celebrated his eighth birthday last Friday. His mother gave a party for him in the gym. The second grade and Miss Burris were guests. Mrs. C. D. Noble Neff of Indianapolis is spending several days with his mother, Mrs. James Neff. It was rumored Monday evening that an airship passed over Milford at about 7 o’clock. Some claim they saw the ship, while others say they heard the noise. Those who saw the flying bird say it was a mere speck and thought to be more than a thousand feet in the air. - *

It is reported that thousands of dollars are being wagered in Indianapolis by parties on the “wet and dry” proposition. The betting is that the supreme court will or will not decide that the Indiana Prohibition law as passed by the last legislature is “Constitutional”. Charles A. Sparklin, the long time businessman in Milford, has sold his stock of goods in the large double store to Messrs. Brunner and Hall of Kokomo. The new firm took possession Wednesday morning, and from this time bn expect to be citizens of Milford as soon as they can secure residences in which to move their families. Marriage licenses were issued to Lew E. Oswalt of Leesburg and Miss Bessie B. Pinkerton of Milford and to Leland Rohrer of Nappanee and Pearl Biller of Milford. Thomas Duckwall Enrolled At CTS Thomas Duckwall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Duckwall, r 3 Noblesville, (former residents of Syracuse) is enrolled this semester at Christian Theological Seminary, a graduate, professional school for the education of ministers for the church. The seminary, historically related to the Christian churches (Disciples of Christ), has a strong ecumenical orientation. The 255 students represent 26 different denominations and come from 121 undergraduate institutions in 35 states and 10 other countries. The 20 faculty members are from six Christian communions. Serious Crime Up 16% Over 1967: FBI Report Serious crime in the United States increased 16 per cent in 1967 when compared with 1966 according to figures made available today through the FBl’s Uniform Crime Reports and released by Attorney General RamseyClark. FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover said all Crime Index offenses registered substantial increases in volume. Crimes of violence were up 15 per cent, led by robbery up 27 per cent, murder 12 per cent, forcible rape 9 per cent, and aggravated assault 8 per cent. The crimes against, property rose by 16 per cent as a group. Individually, auto theft rose 17 per cent while burglary and larcency SSO and over in value were each up 16 per cent. Mr. Hoover stated crime increases were reported by all city groups, with the sharpest change in volume noted in the large core cities 250,000 and over in population up 17 per cent. The suburban areas recorded an overall increase of 16 per cent while the rural areas were up 13 per cent in volume. The crime increases, according to Mr. Hoover, were consistent throughout the United States. The northeastern and north central states were each up 18 per cent, while the western and southern states reported an average increase of 15 per cent. The FBI director noted that serious assaults where a gun was used as the weapon rose 22 per cent and that one out of every five assaults was committed with a gun. The vicious street crime of armed robbery had a sharp upswing of 30 per cent and a firearm was used in 58 per cent of all robbery offenses. The figures released by the FBI disclosed that in 1967 police arrests for all criminal acts, except traffic offenses, increased four per cent. Arrests of adults, which declined slightly in 1966, rose by three per cent in 1967. Arrests of persons under 18 years of age continued to rise in 1967 with an increase of eight per cent. Included in the increased police arrests was a rising volume of arrests for offenses against public order. Elkhart County To Be Represented Tn District Contest Two forestry identification teams and one insect identification team will represent Elkhart county in the district 4-H and FFA judging contest, April 27 as a result of the two contests held recently at the county extension office conducted by Zade Frey, county extension agent, youth. Millersburg FFA team composed of John Leer, Robert Carpenter and Jerry Yoder placed first in forestry identification. The 4-H team with Dan Seltenright, Vicki Berger and Dennis Berger aS members placed second. Third place team was from New Paris. Individual placings one thru five were as follows: John Leer, Dan Seltenright, Robert Carpenter, Vicki Blough and Jerry Yoder. Hie 4-H insect identification team was Larry Weldy, r 1, Wakarusa and Charla Presser, r 1 Bristol, who placed in that order as individuals. Twenty - five leaf specimens and five seed or fruit Samples of forestry trees had to be identified. Thirty-five insects had to be identified, according to common name and order. Cretcher of Leesburg, has been graduated from nine weeks of navy basic training at the naval training center liere. In the first weeks of his naval service he studied military subjects and lived and worked under conditions similar to those he will encounter on his first ship or at, his first shore station. In making the transition from civilian life to naval service, he received instruction under veteran navy petty officers. Court News Complaint Suit Filed Jack M. Carr and Charles E. Searfoss, Syracuse, have filed a promissory note complaint in Kosciusko circuit court against Gordon and Marcia L. Carpenter, seeking a judgment in the amount of $3,420. Damage Suit Filed John R. Mazier, North Webster, has filed a complaint for property damage suit in Kosciusko circuit court against Steven L. Barker, Warsaw.
