Milford Wins, Webster Downed

Syracuse Wins Horseshoe; Loses To Pierceton Saturday

Action, on the Lakeland basketball courts was hot and heavy over the week end as Syracuse traveled to Larwill Friday to win the coveted Silver horseshoe from the South Whitley Bulldogs in an overtime 67-62 game then lost the shoe to Pierceton Saturday in what was termed a real battle. Mentone’s Bulldogs deefated North Webster 110-72 and Milford won over Jefferson township 71-63. Syracuse-Pierceton The Pierceton Cubs won a sweet victory over the Syracuse Yellow Jackets on the Syracuse floor Saturday night — 56 to 52 — but only after a thrill-a-second finM quarter. The visiting Cubs showed real power in an otherwise slow, cheerless first half. The Cubs led 15 to 8 at the end of the first quarter, 32 to 19 at half-time, and 44-32 at three quarter time. The action came in the final quarter wh?n the Jackets came from a trailing position of 16 points to a two-point lead with minutes to go. Freshman Russ Mikel, a newcomer on th' Syracuse varsity squad, charg'd in for a field goal to give the Jackets a 52 50 lead. The lead was short-lived, however, as with 50 seconds remaining Hal Wright got a field goal, and Reed put the Cubs in front, with Schuldt adding a field goal for a four-point final lead. At the free throw line Pierceton made 17 out of 36 attempts, while Syracuse made 21 out of 54 tries. For Syracuse, Greg Smith led with 15 points, while Reed paced the Cubs with 14 points. The box score follows: PIERCETON (56) — Boggs 151, Schuldt 463, Sweetheimer 375, Reed 622, Kreger 122, Wright 202. Totals: 17 field goals, 22 free throws, 15 personal fouls. SYRACUSE (52) — Stucky 242, Clevenger 324, Hollar 013, Webster 613, Smith 714, Firestone 101, Kroh 112, Mikel 102, Bell 001. Totals: 21 field goals, 10 free throws, 22 personal fouls. Webster-Mentone Mentone topped the 100 mark as they downed the North Webster Trojans 110 to 72 on Friday night. Mentone’s Holsclaw led both teams with 24 points. He was followed by Bowser with 20, Richey with 18, Meyers with 16 and Acton with 14. Anderson led the Trojans with 17 and was followed by Baker with 16, Shipley with 15 and Cormican with 10. Brown suffered an ankle injury in practice Tuesday. Kammerer led the Trojans with 20 points on nine field goals and two foul shots. Gunden added 19 and Speicher hit for 13. Graff and Westerbeek hit for 14 each for the Jeff and Johns and Yoder each added 12. Whitley Syracuse defeated South Whitley Friday on the Larwill hardwood 6762 in a thrilling over-time which was Syracuse’s all the way., The regulation play ended with 62 all after South Whitley had held the lead 17-11 at the first stop and Syracuse at the half 40-34 and 5650 at the end of the third quarter. Greg Smith hit an 18 foot jump shot in the over-time to give the Jackets a 64-62 lead. Hollar then hit the first of two foul shots with 10 seconds remaining and Stucky got the rebound, giving the ball to Kroh who hit two free throws to make the final score 67-62. With the. victory Syracuse gained possession of the coveted silver horseshoe. The Jackets led the rebound battle gaining 44 to South Whitley’s 32. Rob Clevenger led all scorers for the evening as he scored 35 points on 12 field goals and 11 foul shots. Smith was the only other player in double figures as he tapped in 13. Zorger with 29 was the only Bulldog in double figures. Lakeland Science Fair

Michael L. Neff, chairman of the Lakeland Community School Corporation’s science fair committee, and John A. Naab, principal of Syracuse elementary school, have announced the dates of the 1968 science fairs which are to be held in Syracuse this year. The Lakeland science fair will be held on Saturday, March 9, from 1 to 8:30 p.m. and the Syracuse elementary school fair will be held on Saturday, March 16, from 1 to 7 p. m. Both events will be held in the old gym of the high school. The Lakeland science fair is again a joint venture of the three high schools (Milford, North Webster and Syracuse). Committee mem-

Webster, Talma And Milford Are Jr. High Tourney Winners

Winners in the first evening’s play of the junior high tournament presently being held at Claypool on Mondays and Wednesdays. In the first game of the evening, North Webster downed Pierceton while Talma defeated Beaver Dam in the second game. Milford-Syracuse a Milford downed Syracuse 44-26 F in the third game of the tournament. The Yellow Jackets got the lead in the first quarter and held it until the second quarter when Milford took over and kept it. Milford’s Fred Beer won scoring honors for the evening with 14 points. Teammate Pat Spearman added 12. Syracuse Downs West Noble In Freshmen Play The freshmen Syracuse Yellow Jackets downed West Noble 64-41 in a game played Thursday evening. The Jackets led all the way as the first quarter ended 15-6 and the half time score was 29-13. The Jackets continued to find the mark in the second quarter and led 58-21 at the end of the third quarter.

He defended this point by saying if the board went out of the corporation for a “name” coach a much higher salary would have to be paid, and, since education is the prime purpose of all schooling, would this not invite a protest from teachers to have a salary similar to that of the coach. Lion Bucher said there was strong opposition in North Webster to hiring a coach from the existing coaching staff. Other Business In other club business, an announcement was made by Lion president Durward Seely that the Lions and their ladies would meet with the Leesburg Lions at the Shrine building at 7 p.m. February 19, to pass the gavel to the Leesburg club. Lion Arch Baumgartner explained that a meeting was held at the Masonic Temple in Milford last Thursday night to see if there was any local interest in supporting Craig Ruch in his trip to Europe this summer with the School Band and Chorus of America. The club voted to support anything the committee in charge of such a program submits. Lois Circle Calvary WSWS Meets Wednesday The Lois circle of the Calvary EUB church Women’s Society of World Service of Syracuse met in the church parlors Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 31. The members were greeted and served refreshments by the hostesses, Mrs. Russel Hinderer and Mrs. Opal Miller. In the absence of leader Mrs. C. V. Steel, Mrs. C. G. Horn, co-lead-er, presided. Fourteen members responded to roll call. Mrs. Ray Buhrt gave the lesson on “The Faiths of Men’-’. Following the lesson the meeting closed with the Mizpah benediction.
