Syracuse Downs Webster In Pre-Christmas Game

Ken Workman’s Syracuse Yellow Jackets broke a long dry spell last evening as they downed North Webster’s Trojans 58-44. In what was described as a ragged game, the Jackets controled the boards as they brought down 45 rebounds as compared with 31 for the Trojans. The Syracuse boys also hit 23 out of 55 field goal attempts and 12 of 14 from the charity stripe. North Webster, on the other hand, only hit for IS out of 56 attempts from the field and 12 of 17 from the free throw line. Rob Clevenger led the Jackets attack with 18 points. He was followed by Smith with 15 and Webster with 14. B. Culver was high point man for the Trojans with 11 points and was followed by Cormican with 10. Box scores folow: SYRACUSE (58» — Stucky 403. Clevenger 742, Webster 622, Smith 553. Conrad 102 and Hollar 012 for totals of 23-12-14. NORTH WEBSTER (44< — Brower 211, Cormican 341. Barrett 201, Shipley 143. Baker 301, B. Culver 432. Lewallen 102 for totals of 16-12-12. Syracuse also won the B-team game 43-31. Milford — Argos Dan Brown led the Milford Trojans to a 82-63 win over Argos on Friday even ng by hitting 12 field goals and five foul shots for a total of 29. The game was played on the Argo court. Also in double figures for the Trojans were Ted Speicher with 19 and Tom Gunden with . '5. Oxer-; meyer led the Argos boys with 22 points .All was tied at 15 at the end of the first stop but the TrojanS took the lead in the second quarter and led 40-36 at half time and 58-40 at the I third stop to win the game by 19 , points. The West Noble boys were in the load 17-13 at the dose of the first quarter but the Trojans tied them at 35 aS by half-time However. West Noble regained the lead 56-51 at the third Slop and 73-68 at the end of the game. > West Noble’s Steve Ansbaugh led his team and captured scoring honors for the evening as he hit the net for 34 points on 12 field goals and 10 foul shots. Brown was again high for Milford with 21 points. Other West Noble men in double figures were Franks with 14 and Mike Ansbaugh with 13. Trojans in ! double figures were Kammerer with 15. Syracuse — Manchester The Syracuse Yellow Jackets dropped a 70-65 decision to the North Manchester Squires last Frii day in the Syracuse gym. In the early going the Yellow Jackets built up a lead to as much as 14 points but by halftime the • lead had dwindled to three. The third quarter saw the Squires get | hot and take a two point lead into the final period. In that last quarter the Squires continued their hot shooting and led by as much as 12 but the Yellow Jackets fought back to within five as the final buzzer sounded. The rebounding battle saw the Jackets out-rebound the shorter Manchester squad by 13 but the Jackets committed 16 errors to only eight for Manchester. The Jackets hit 22 of 57 on field goal attempts but the Squires got 17 more shots and hit on five more occasions. At the free throw line the ' Yellow Jackets hit 21 out of 28 for 75 per cent while the Squires hit ' 16 of 22 for a 72 per cent reading. The Jackets were again led by Rob Clevenger and Dave Webster with 20 and 18 points and Greg Smith hit for 10. The Squires had a wellbalanced scoring attack led by Rex Guthrie and Audry Butterbaugh with 17 paints apiece. Miller anti Karn followed with 14 and 11 respectively. SYRACUSE BOWS TO BREMEN The Syracuse freshmen Jackets played a good hard game at Bremen Tuesday but suffered a three point defeat. This overtime thriller Laves the- Jackets with a 5-3 record j for the season. ■ Big, tall Dave Elliott led die Jackets with a 22 point lead. Tngerham led Bremen with 17 points. Syracuse scored 64 per cent of their foul shot attempts and Bremen made 68 per cent of theirs. The Jackets were leading at the end of the first quarter with a score of 8-5. Later in the second quarter Bremen took a lead of three points and in the third the score was 31-33 | with Bremen leading. Syracuse regained their lead but j failed to keep it and once again Bremen caught up with them. As I the last few seconds of the fourth quarter passed the score was again tied. Milford Freshman Team Loses Three Games The Milford freshman basketball team dropped three games during the past week. On December 11, i the Trojans were defeated by a tough Syracuse team xvith a score of 33-19. Mikel of Syracuse scored 14 points and Roger Korenstra netted seven points for his Milford team.
