Heavy Action Last Week On Lakeland Hardwood

Action was heavy on the Lakeland basketball courts last week end as a total of four games were played. North Webster downed Albion 7573 in a real thriller Friday, but the Trojans were Stopped on Saturday 66-50 bv a game Wakarusa team. Milford played on its home court Friday for the first time in three years and defeated Vince Doyle's Wawasee Lakers 95-53. Syracuse was unsuccessful in its outing against Warsaw 59-49 Friday and tost a real lieartbreaker 73-71 as they couldn’t hold a first half lead against the Larwill Trojans on Saturday. Albion - Webster North Wi lister downed ft! bion last Friday in a game that kept spectators on the edge of their seats all the way. Albion led at the end of the first stop 20-18 with the teams ending both the half 42-42 and the third quarter 59-59 in ties. North Webster w ent'ahead in the last quarter to win 75-73. .Albion had four and North Webster had three players in double figures. Cormican led the scoring for the evening with 33 points for the Trojans on 11 field goals and 12 free throws. B. Culver added 13 for the winning team and Shipley hit for 10. Albion’s Davis hit nitie field goals and six free throws for a total of 24 paints with Hile and Norse hitting 15 and 14 respectively. Wakarusa - Webster North Webster was downed 66-50 Saturday night when the Trojans met the boy’s from Wakarusa. Wakarusa led at all stops — 9-18. 25-32. 40-48 and 59-66. In double figures far North Webster were Shipley with 14. Brower with 12 and Baker with 11. Strichkr was high for the winning team with 19. He W«s fo'lowed by Reynolds. Neff and Jamison with 12 each. Milford - Prep The Milford Trojans returned home to their own goa’Jxxise Friday evening and preceded to win their second game of the season by a convincing margin of 95-53. This was the first game to be played in Milford for three years and the Trojans responded with a fine basketball game. Dan Brown continued his scoring barrage as he finished with 27 points Tom Gunden was close behind with a fine floor game and 22 points. Keevin Estep came off the bench and was very impressive with his fine rebounding and also contributed 12 points to the Trojans’ total. Larry Kammerer was the other Trojan to score in double figures as he scored 10 points. The Trojans of coach Bill Dorsey scorehixf the nets regularly and ended the night's encounter with a fine field goal percentage of 53. Another factor that was influential in their victory was the Trojans’ -control of the boards. Milford gained 48 rebounds in comparison to Wa- j waste’s 34. All in all. Milford showed better : team spirit and hustle throughout the entire game. Syracuse . five point lead at the end of the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets then dug in and fought back to within one at half time. The third period saw the Tigers pull back out to a five point lead. In the final quarter it was do-or-die for the Yellow Jackets as they applied more pressure and struggled back to within one but the Tigers then got several easy baskets which accounted for the final spread of 10 points. The Yellow Jackets lost the rebounding battle for the first time this year to the tall Tigers, 46 to 40. Also, the Yellow Jackets again committed more errors than did I their opponents committing 25 miscues to only 12 for Warsaw. Both teams were relatively cold from | the field as Warsaw hit 32 per cent to 31 per cent for the Yelow Jackiets. But in all. the Tigers had 10 more fitSd goals than did the Yellow Jackets. At the charity stripe the Yellow Jackets hit on 10 more than did the Tigers. Their percentage was also higher at 66 per cent while the Tigers could only find the range 42 per cent of the time. The Yellow Jackets were led in scoring by Rich Bell, Dave Webster and Curt Stucky with 14. 13 and 12 points respectively. The Tigers were extremely well-balanc-ed as no one was in double figures. They were paced by Dan Stanley and six-foot six inch sophomore Kim Esst nlmrg with nine fwints each-B-team Game The junior Jackets dropped an exciting 43 to 46 decision to the Warsaw B-squad to run their record to five and three. The Yellow Jackets took an early lead but lost it in the second quarter. In the third period the two teams played on even terms as the third quarter ended with Warsaw up by fie In the last period the Ye!b>A Jackets, led by Gary Firestone’s 11 points were not done yet as they fought back and took a 46 to 42 lead with a minute to go but in , that last minute the Tigers hit a couple of crucial field goals to tie it and the two free throws by the Tigers’ Wilrout ended it in Warsaw’s favor. Firestone, along with Bill Pipp. i led the Yellow Jackets with 12 points apiece. Dennis Harper chipped in with 10. Deatsman and Wilrout led the Warsaw attack with jl4 and 12 points respectively. The win leaves Larwill with seven victories and only one defeat while Syracuse lost their seventh in seven games this vear.

Yellow Jackets outrebounded Larwill but committed errors to a near perfect for Larwill. The Yellow Jackets were led in scoring by Rob Clevenger who hit for a Syracuse season high of 23. Curt Stucky added 15 and Greg Smith chipped in ■ with 14. Mike Graves of Larwill 'equalled the game high of 23 and the Trojans’ Jeff Campbell was right i behind with 22 markers. i B-team Game Th? Syracuse junior varsity squad met d?feat at the hands of a fast Larwill B team. This leaves the junior Jackets with a record of five wins and four losses. The Trojans got off to a quick lead and were up by 10 at the close of the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets could only cut it to eight before the half ended. In the final

half, however, the Yellow Jackets caught fire and worked their way back to a two point lead. Then the Jackets went cold with three minutes remaining and the Trojans moved back to a six point lead as, the final buzzer sounded. Chuck Coburn led the junior Jackets with 10 points but the Trojans’ Gary Walter took game honors with 11. — This Week This week sees all three teams again on Saturday and the North Webster - Syracuse tilt wil be Tuesday. Friday Milford travels to Argos while North Webster travels to Concord to do battle with the Falcons from Fairfield and Syracuse plays host to Manchester. Milford’s game on Saturday will
