THE HOOSIER DAY By FRANK A. WHTTI

Hoosier politics, like true love, never runs smoothly. This could be political heresy, but it is how 1 feel in my saner moments. I am not going to panic if after eight prosperous years, Democrats are dumped. The same holds if Republicans fail in a spirited bid to take over. It is my faith that the Viet Nam war will end. as all wars have ended. Also, I believe our great State and the USA will go on to exciting heights of prosperity and achievement regardless of which party wins. Vance Hartke — Behind and before the public gaze. how to shut oft th? militant attack by U. S. Senator Vance Hartke of President L. B .Johnson and LBJ's Viet Nam policies, has Hoosier Democrats almost at wits end. The governor. state D?mocrat chairman, and all the party candidates. have been coping with this problem foe months. Secretary of State Edgar Whitcomb, one leading G.O.P. candidate for Governor, chided U S. Senator Birch Bayh, Jr., lor not defending LBJ and the polices A private poll by Bavh’s politi- ■ cal machine read, "lay oft th- Viet Nam war argument.” Hartke has forced Bayh lately to come out openly in answer to audience questions Bayh has spoken as he was consistently voted in support of the President and our pres- ■ ence in Viet Nam He said current- j ]y that were we to “run out" on : Vfet Nam our allies trying to keep peace in Europe would no longer i have faith that the USA would keep 1 its commitments. A group of Hoosiers, including a Methodist minister, has been meet- j ing to involve Indiana in a "dump Johnson” movement. A spokesman said discussion of Hartke being a-

favorite son-candidate of Indiana to I “dump Johnson”. Hartke has withheld his decision, although nationally making a bold prediction that Johnson will not be nominated or i re-elected. All five Democratic candidates for re-election to Congress, have I Hartke to worry about, in addition to growing Republican trends, the unpopular war. and a redistricting impasse. Collectively they marched to Hartke's Washington office. They asked Hartke to “lay off” his attack on Johnson, that has been widened from the war to almost everything in which the President has a hand. j Hartke, taken aback, shifted his public utterances for the moment

from LBJ to an attack on Viet Nam's General William Westmoreland being in this country making speeches when desperate fighting is underway in Viet Nam. Republican headaches multiply. State G.O.P. chairman Charles Hendricks, Secretary of State Whitcomb. the committee and the party members are split widely and deeply on who will get coveted nominations for top state offices, this time. No one knowing Purdue dean Earl Butz, who was first to announce as a Republican candidate for Governor, doubt he is inspired by a public service motive. G.O.P. critics say regardless of | good intentions, that no one without legislative experience and intimate knowledge of the complex pro-

blems of the state government can 1 make a good governor. Indiana now has a budget in the billion doKar class and more than 25.000 employees. and is a big business. Democratic old timers resented Governor Roger D. Branigin making a successful debut in politics from the top, instead of up from precinct level. It is realized other G.O.P. candidates, possibly chairman Hendricks included, will toss their hats in the ring and do battle in light of Republican gains. Take it from me, Indiana voters are in for the hottest and most bitter campaign to name a standard bearer for President, Governor, and what have you in a lifetime. Viet Nam is a top issue. Feeling never ran deeper in a disunified nation, even over Lincoln
