E INDIANA STATE ME DICAL ,7/1 , ASSOCIATION im
CHILDREN AND HOSPITALS lIFHAT of the child going to a ” hospital for an operation? At home, he has been accustomed to close association with his family; has supplied the answers to physiological and emotional needs. Going to a strange environment among strange individuals can be a devastating experience. In special need of consideration are children in the age group under five years. The greatest upset mentally and emotionally is suffered by children in their second and third year. The initial phase of confusion may lead into despair after hours or days, and the child may become withdrawn and apathetic. The child’s physician needs to enlist the help of the parents in aiding the child to understand, the reason for the operation. To* gether they should try to prepare the child for what the inside of the hospital will be like. The child can benefit by the assurance that the anesthetic is intended to prevent pain, and that awakening and well-being will follow. A help for the child is to be allowed to bring into the hospital some familiar object such as a toy or a doll. The mother should be permitted to remain with the child in the hospital at least until be has had his scheduled bath, and her daily visits will be highly beneficial.
