carefully planned and the choices limited, according to Mrs. Elaine Dolch, of Purdue university's family life-child development department. Plan to Shop when the stores aren’t crowded and when you have time to let the youngster make unhurried decisions. Leave the other

children at home with daddy or a sitter so that you can concentrate on choosing gifts. A young child needs a lot of guMance in making selections for holiday gtft-giving. Limit the shopping to a few simple choices such as “Let’s get Grandmother a pot holder or a tea towel. . .which of these two pot holders do you think she’d prefer?” Your youngster may enjoy a “secret” trip with daddy to a nearby store to buy a box of note paper for mother. Part of the fun of gift-giving is wrapping. If your time is limited, buy a couple of gifts yourself and let the child choose one for that someone special and wrap it himself. Just provide a large piece of colorful wrapping paper or a paper bag and stickers and let the little artist use his imagination. In Newfoundland The people in Newfoundland fish during Christmas week. Then, it is customary, they bring their catch to be sold. The funds from the fish sale are contributed to their local parish.

The Three Kings And Epiphany If you were to travel through the rural areas of Austria, you would no doubt wonder about an unusual inscription written in chalk above the doorway of many homes. It goes like this: C - M - B - 1967. These letters are renewed every year at Epiphany, the only change bang replacement of the date the new year. On January 6, 1968, the letters will be renewed, with the sole addition of the new year’s numeral. The letters stand for the names of the Three Kings, or the Three Wise Men. or Magi. In case you have forgotten, they are Caspar. Melchior, and Balthasar. The Three Wise Men are the focal point of the celebration of Epiphany in the W’estem church, as they’ are considered the first called upon to worship Christ as God and King. Tradition holds that January 6 was the date upon which the Wise Men completed their journey to Bethlehem. Yet Epiphany, from the Greek “revelation of the Lord” actually celebrates three manifest- j ations of Christ: to the Wise Men. at his ba pt fem 30 years later, and in the wedding feast at Cana. The Austrian custom of painting the initials of the Wise Men and the year above doorways replaced the

Cahn Children Active children become more exhuberant with the coming of the Christmas season. The mad rush of shopping and holiday preparations stimulates a child’s emotions. Child specialists believe that a quiet atmosphere and explaining the joys of the holiday will help them, and help you have a more peaceful season. We should spend more time getting children ready for a reverent Christmas rather than a commercial one. When the entire family pause to understand the true meaning of Christmas, it will be a joy to ail. For Your Table Decorators say that your table arrangements should be kept as low as possible. In this way conversation across the table is possible without dodging heads back and forth. pagan “Drudenfuss” or pentagram and other hex sy-mbols inscribed thereon to guard the house from evil spirts. During the Austrian Epiphanyseason. three boys dressed as the Three Wise Men, and called Sternsmger. or "Star Singers”, carry the message of the Magi from house to house. They are rewarded with cakes, candy and fruit; in recent years have taken up collections for charitable groups around the world.

The Best Gift What is the best gift for a child? Where many parents are concerned. the “best gift” is the most expensive one they can afford. Maybe it is the bicycle, because dad “didn’t have one when I was young.” Maybe it is a new or a used car for junior or sister to “run arcund in”. The best gift for the very young is something to enjoy. Youngsters aren’t impressed with price tags. They don’t care whether a gift costs $49.50 or $4.95. It must amuse them, else they are likely to toss it aside and play with the pots and pans in the kitchen. The plain truth is that, at Christmastime. too many parents have a tendency to try to make up for all the things they haven’t done for their children by giving them expensive material possessions. Th?se are not always the best gifts. Rather than expensive gifts, children just might appreciate some of the intangible gifts parents used to give. Time spent together, at play, at learning a new skill or a new game. A bit of togetherness, doing things as a family group. A helping hand, whether with a job that needs doing, or a problem that needs solving. A bit of family togetherness — isn’t this, perhaps, the best gift of aM? Gifts From Our Kitchen Look in your cupboards for Christmas giving ideas. A jar of homemade jam. jelly, marmalads or homemade pickles is a welcome gift to many. Give a Christmas tree decorated with cookies. Select a small tree. Another delightful gift is Christmas bread. Make it plain or as a Swedish tea ring or coffee cake.

Tree Os Nineties Was Simple Ever wonder just what ddtimers were talking about when they spoke of a "real old-fashioned Christmas tree”? Back in the ISSO’s. it seems, Christmas trees were both charming and simple. At the very top of the tree was a gilded, sparkling star. The branch es were adorned with such things as streamers, flags, popcorn and cranberries strung together, chains of gold and silver paper, candles in holders (we don’t recommend this.
