Message Os Christmas Lives Anew
‘•And 10. the Star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was.” Matthew 2:9. “And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger”. Luke 2:16. From two who became His disciples come the words that tcß the story of that Holy Night, the first Christmas. Matthew the tax collector wrote of the Star that shone in the east, and of wise men who followed it to find and worship Him. Uike, the physician, wrote of shepherds watching in the fields and herald angels singing in the heavens At church services during this Christmas season the words of the tax collector and the physician will be read and studied once again, with ever deepening meaning.

Consolidation of THE MILFORD MAIL (Est. 1888) and THE SYRACUSE-WAWASEE JOURNAL (Est. 1907)
The joyful sound of carols harks back to the first of all carols, the I words of the heavenly host. "Glorv to God in the h ;, ’hest. and on earth peace, good will toward men”. The glow of candles symbolizes i the birth of Christ as the Light of the World, and it also mirrors the eternal gleam of the Star of Bethlehem i The spirit of giving takes guidance; from the gifts of the Wise Men. who brought goki. frankincense and i mvrrh to Him. Above all. at Christmas, mankind experiences once again the reverence, wonder anti rejoicing of the wise men. of whom Matthew’ says. "And when they were come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell idown and worshipped Him."
Various Trees Preference in Christmas trees varies across the country, with balsam and Douglas Fir probably the Eastern favorites because they retain needles two to three weeks indoqrs Scotch pines are growing fast in favor. A Norway spruce makes an excellent outdoor community tree, but it sheds needies soon in a warm room. Juniper and hemlock, while fine as Christmas greens, do not make ideal indoor trees. Pine needles are long and soft. Sprue ■ needles are usually four-sid-ed. ponted and stabbing to the hand. Balsam needles are flat, dark green and Soft. Douglas fir needles are flat and pointed.

Christmas Prayer St. Francis of Assisi is credited with making popular the Christmas Nativity scene. He is also author of a prayer inspired by the Christmas spirit: “Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is cknibt. faith. Where there is sadness, joy. 0 Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood. as to understand; to be loved. as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned. And it is in dying that we are bom in Eternal Life".
Take Precautions During Holiday Season
An emphatic plea for extreme caution on the part of both drivers and pedestrians during the Christmas holiday period has been voiced by the Chicago Motor club. “Most of us fail to realize that the Christmas holiday period is the most dangerous time of the year for anyone who is walking or driving. The hofiiday season is wonderful, but the best way to preserve the Christmas spirit is to take the responsibility for courteous and careful driving and walking.” The Chicago Motor club pointed out that most traffic accidents occur when the usually careful driver takes his mind off his driving — when he takes that one unnecessary chance. Pedestrians are urged to obey traffic signals and cross only at intersections. Motorists are to be alert for slippery spots to signal well in advance of stopping or turning; to keep a safe distance behind the car ahead; to be considerate of ■ pedestrians: and to drive at a speed i suitable for existing conditions. The motor club records show that the period from Christmas thru New Year's Day is an extremely hazardous one. with Christmas Eve particularly dangerous for motorists and pedestrians. TREE TRIMMING The prettiest Christmas tree looks its best only if it is properly trimmed. The number of lights us- ■ ed—whether too few or too many — 1 affects the appearance of even ; the most perfect tree. Here's a formula used by professional lighting ;experts: Height of tree (in feet) x width of tree at base (in feet) x 3. It’s not as complicated as it sounds. For example, if your tree is six feet high and feet wide at the base; 3 x 4% x 3 equals 81 lights for a good lighting effect.

Do We Need Old St. Nick? Is it true, as some today claim that Santa the Saint has been transformed by modern custom into Santa the Sugar Daddy? Do we really need good old St. Nick? Some of our educators, with a nodding assent from “modern” parents, would put an end to the Santa Claus myth. Confusing to young minds, they say. Perhaps the Santa Claus idea has been abused and over-commer-cialized. Yet it is doubtful if any child has ever suffered from the grand illusion. In fact, childhood memories of Santa’s visit remain with most of us throughout a lifetime. A Santa on two different street corners? Why not? Isn’t Santa something of a mystery, and a symbol? Doesn’t he really typify generosity and thoughtfulness? In the imaginative mind of a child Santa is a symbol of Chrfetmas. And. let’s face it, it is really no reflection on good old St. Nick that many of the children who eagerly await his arrival each Christmas Eve have never heard the story of the Holy Child from their parents. Female Holly Most everyone knows that among bird families the most brilliantly colored is generally the male. But, did you know there is both a male holly tree and a female holly tree and that only female hollies bear berries? You can distinguish between the two at blossom time in late May or early June. The female flower has a green protuberance in the center surrounded by four white pistils. The male flower has four yellow stamens and does not have a center core of green.
