EDITORIALS November Is Here ...
Yes, today is “November 1 and the weather shows us that fall is here to stay. The leaves have fallen and the daylight hours are much shorter than they were a month ago. The first part of November is peaceful—a time of rest before the holiday season begins. This week, October 29 through November 4, we are observing national children’s book week—to encourage children’s reading and endorse good Ixjoks. It’s the week when most libraries have special features. The most important week of the month is November]") to 11 and is American Education Week. It's by Presidential proclamation and is to focus public attention on the needs and achievements of our
A Change - For The Better
Tremendous build-up was given to this fall’s new TV programs. Despite what was expected, none of the fall crop made it big in the listener surveys. Maybe it would be time to consider a change—one we believe would be much better. As one who spends little time in front of the ‘tube’, unless its after the newspaper has been read and everything else done for the day, or unless it’s a sporting event, we certainly cannot be classified as expert on the situation. It seems, however, there is too much of a tendency to follovv-the-leader. A western makes it big one season, so the next year its every one of the channels with the bad guys and the good guys shooting it out. Family situation comedies have their place, but many of them are strictly a big waste of time. Foreign and domestic intrigue seem to fall in the same category. Variety shows leave a lot to be desired in almost every instance. No questionjibout it! Fresh, new material must be a tremendous task. With this in mind, a suggestion for improved

country’s schools. Most area schools will be holding open house during this time. World church music Sunday is November 5. Election day is November 7<with only city and-town officials being elected this year. Christmas seals campaign begins on November 11 and runs through the month of December. Funds raised go to support the fight against tuberculosis. With Thanksgiving on November 23 comes the holiday season and the rush which will not end until after the new year begins.
TV watching must be made. Why not try good old American history? Certainly our school days proved there is much more to this great country than barroom brawls at the local saloon, stage holdups, gun battles between gunmen and fueds between cattlemen and sheep raisers. TV would have us believe this is all our history is really about. It’s just not true! Beginning way back in colonial days when our great country was founded, through the Revolution, into the War of 1812, and on and on, we could have much about the way this nation grew, state by state. It could be a great asset to the family in many ways to see such programs. They could even be serialized. Apparently the TV people need to be awakened that American history could be great for viewing. Take your pen and pencil in hand today and let the networks know. You might miss one of this fall’s programs while you’re writing, but — so what ? — Hoosier Democrat
