WHEN IT HAPPENED IN SYRACUSE ONE YEAR AGO Josepii Hughes of Syracuse was named fireman of the year as county firemen association members met at the fairgrounds at Warsaw for their annual fish fry Thursday. Ron Richey, son of the former pastor of the Syracuse Methodist church Rev. J. Ross Richey and Mrs. Richey, will be married October 29 to Miss Joanna Rawlings in Grace Methodist church, South Bend. Syracuse firemen responded to a call at 1:30 a.m. Monday in the wooded area just west of the channel bridge to extinguish a trash fire. Jon Edward Sheire. 25, of Colorado Springs. Colo, was one of three men killed Thursday, Oct. 13 when a light plane in which they were riding exploded over Danville, Ind. A Sacred concert was presented Sunday at the Syracuse Calvary EUB church in honor of the church's fifth anniversary at its present location. FIVE YEARS AGO At about 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23. snow fell in the Lakeland area and continued to fall intermittently throughout the day, the first snow of the year. Syracuse basketball season tickets went on sale Tuesday. Basketball players and cheer leaders are selling them door-to-door. Mrs. James Barrett and daughters. Hughes of the Syracuse Methodist church will give leadership to the service of worship. TEN YEARS AGO Miss Ethel Bowser, librarian at the Syracuse public library, attended the tiiree-day 66th annual conference of the Indiana Library Association at the Sheraton-Lincoln hotel, Indianappolis last week. Syracuse firemen answered a 5 a.m. call Wednesday morning from Carl Myrick who lives in the Pete Harkless house near Boner Lake. Damage was listed at $6,000. At a meeting of the congregation of the Methodist church Tuesday night, it was voted to purchase land for a future building site for a new’ church. John Trook has been ill with the flu and fc at his home now at Huntington. Mrs. A. L. Miller returned Monday night from a visit with her daughter. Mrs. Walter Smith at Evansville. TWENTY YEARS AGO A movement has been started here the past weeks toward erecting a permanent Scout cabin. Details will be worked out in a few days. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Cripe of Goshen and Mr. and Mrs. Vem Fisher of Ligoni r spent last evening with Mr. and Mrs. Onal Snobarger. Phend and Brown of Milford started work on the construction of the base for the new Stand pipe on North Huntington street. Thursday. Mrs. J. E. FORTY YEARS AGO Whitmer Held died on Thursday, Oct. 20. in his Lake Wawasee home of infantile paralysis at the age of 36. He is survived by his -wife, one son. cne daughter, his parents and one sister. On Sunday in the home of Mrs. Ella Ott, a family reunion was held with a basket dinner served at noon. Charles Benner has moved his family from the O'Dell property, into his mother's'. Mrs. Minerva Benner's property on Huntington Street. Mrs. W. C. Gants returned home Sunday from Indianapolis where she spent three weeks visiting relatives. The telephone operators enjoyed a 6 o’clock dinner in the Grand hotel Saturday. The dinner party was given for Evelyn Gordy who is going to Los Angeles, Calif., to spend the winter.
