Civil Defense is Program For Wednesday Club Civil defense was the program presented to members of the Wednesday Afternoon club of Syracuse when the ladies met with Mrs. George W. Kleopfer on October 18. The meeting was opened in the usual form by president Mrs. Paul O. Warner. The program chairman, Mrs. Vernon Brinkman, turned the meeting over to Mrs. Ralph Thornburg after rdi call and committee reports. Mrs. Thornburg introduced the afternoon's guest speaker, Milo Clase, Kosciusko county director of civil defense. Mr. Clase gave the history, purpose and functioning of the civil defense program. He described it as an educational program in preparing people to survive atomic or tornado attacks. He demonstrated means of communication between the hundreds of stations and said that usually a home-station had information of a tornado or atomic attack four to six hours before hand. He also covered the methods of survival being set up and passed out wafers that are being stored m the shelters. Many pertinent and simple means of protecting oneself against the harm of fall-outs were given the members. Mrs. Thornburg covered the civil defense program in Syracuse and said that it worked in cooperation with the fire department and the Red Cross. While the civil defense has been functioning in Syracuse fcr some time, only recently have they obtained a place of their own. I The town of Syracuse gave the unit its present location, but the men worked long hours and put in hard labor to restore the building. This was made possible by generous donations " of materials. Each person in the unit buys his own equipment. Their means of financial support is directing traffic at games or by patroling teen-age dances. Mrs. Thornburg also mentioned the shelters available in Syracuse. The roll call had been humorous and timely with each member presenting a favorite cartoon. The sec-retary-treasurer, Mrs. Court Slabaugh read the minutes of the previous meeting and gave a treasurer’s report. The various committee chairmen reporting were Mrs. Richard Heyde on the flower fund and Mrs. Warner and Mrs. Heyde on their attending the 13th district meeting at North Judson. Mrs. Nathan Insley was a guest at the meeting and two new’ members in attendance were Mrs. Virgil Bob?ck and Mrs. Gene Ludwig. The meeting was closed with the Mizpah benediction. Mrs. Kleopfer served refreshments during the social period which followed. The next meeting will be with Mrs. Robert J. Mauzy in the home of her mother. Mrs. Arthur C. Schrader, on Wednesday, Nov. 1.
