BPW Members Hold Halloween Party At Oakwood The Syracuse Business and Professional Women’s club held its October meeting on Tuesday evening, the 10th, at the Oakwood hotel with members arriving in masquerade costumes and enjoying the fun of trying to identify one another. The tables were Cleverly d'ecorated in the Halloween theme by the hostesses, Mrs. John Craw and Mrs. Leonard Barnhart. A white elephant auction was held to raise money for the club’s benefit programs. A short business meeting was held during which time final arrangements were made for the annual rummage sale to be held in the Syracuse scout cabin on October 20 and 21. Hex Grange Has Gourds, Grain Judging The regular session of the Hex Grange was held recently in the Grange hall near Syracuse. There were 40 present including 13 officers and one guest. The agriculture and home economics committees were in charge of the program which included a piano solo and roll call of each member’s dearest wish and a gumdrop contest. The gourds and grain were judged by Maro Meyers of New Paris. Results were as follows: Gourds, Greg Hire, first, John Hire, second, Trent Hire, third: Beth, Steven and Jo Savage, Trent Hire and Greg Hire, large gourds; David Wogoman, Allen, Greg and Susie Robinson and Trent Hire, 'small gourds: Trent Hire, Melanie Gire and Scott Hire, best single gourd. Cash awards were given in all three piacings of each class. Grain awards were: Kenneth Nicolai, first, Oliver Hibschman, second, wheat; Kenneth Nicolai, Ernest Richards, oats; and Merle Darr and Kenneth Nicholai, soybeans. The exhibits were photographed and refreshments served by the committee. The next meeting will be a Halloween party and will be in the charge of those having October. November and December birthdays. Stanley Nicolai will be the chairman. All children are asked to go masked, as wdll as any adults who wish to do so. On October 12 Ethel Richards and Mildred Savage judged the home economics contest at Waubee, and the youth installation team of Hex Grange installed the 1968 Waubee officers. Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Hinkle. Syracuse, have left for Bradenton, Fla., where they will Spend the winter. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur VanAnda of r 1 Syracuse returned to their winter home at Fort Wayne this week.

Musical Program Presented At Bethel Women’s Fellowship Mrs. Cora Stahfly of Nappanee presented a program of music Thursday evening, Oct. 12, at the monthly meeting of the Bethel Church of the Brethren Women’s Fellowship, Milford. Mrs. Stahly pointed out interesting facts on how to lead and sing hymns. Group singing was enjoyed. President Mrs. Delbert Moneyheffer opened the meeting with devotions. A short business meeting was held beore the introduction of the speaker. Refreshments were served at the close of the meeting by the hostesses, Mrs. Jesse Miller and Mrs. Levi Chupp. Waubee Grange Officers Installed Waubee Grange met Thursday evening, Oct. 12, in Milford with Ray Bray, master, presiding. During the business session reports were heard from the following standing committees: home economics, agriculture and legislative; from the committee that provided contests during the Milford Festival for the children. The committee felt the program was a success, and many young people participated. Officers Installed All past officers answered to roll call and all new officers were present for the installation. Installation was in the charge of the youth of Hex Grange, which is located north of Syracuse in Elkhart county. The team consisted of Joe Hibschman, installing officer; Gene Nicholai, acting master Jane Hibschman, marshall; Stan Hibschman, assistant steward; Linda Bushong, lady assistant steward; Pam Troyer, chaplain; Mrs. Mildred Savage, pianist; Bonnie Bushong, soloist. The service was inspiring and ably given. The home economics committee conducted the sewing contest with the following winners: Mrs. Robert Hollar received first place and Mrs. Glen Pinkerton second place in the housecoat division; Mrs. Robert Hollar, first, for her sampler. In the cookie baking Mrs. Herman Miller placed first and Mrs. Hollar second. These entries will be judged in the Pomona exhibits December 19 when the St-Mar-KoS Pomona will meet at the Waubee hall. A pot luck supper will be served at that meeting at 6:45. The agriculture committee conducted a grain exhibit. Marshall! Estep and Max Anglin placed first in the ear corn and soy bean exhibits. Refreshments of sandwiches, salads, cookies and coffee were serv- ; ed to 40 members and guests. Eighteen members were present from the Hex Grange. The October 26 meeting will be in charge of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bray and Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Estep. The charter was draped in memory of the late Everett Butrick of Milford, whose death occurred recently.

Visiting Matrons,! Patrons Honored By Eastern Star Visiting matrons and patrons night was the occasion of the special meeting of Kosciusko chapter number 160, Order of Eastern Star on Wednesday, Oct. 11. Among the honored guests were associate grand matron Mrs. ’ Roy Oberly, dirtrict deputy Mrs. C. J. Myers and grand representatives Mrs. Dale Dolan and Mrs. Jean Me Gowan. Also, grand committee members Mrs. Chris Kammerer and Eugene Marshall. There were approximately 115 guests present from the following chapters: Argos, Bristol, Plymouth South Bend number two, Valley, Culver, Pierceton, Starlight, Goshen, St. Joseph, Bourbon, Leesburg, Lakeville, Mentone, Warsaw, Mishawaka, Walkerton, North Manchester, North Liberty, Bremen, Nappanee, New Carlisle, Avilla, Forest chapter of Butler and Milford. The program for the evening was presented by Mrs. Fred Culp, Mrs. Wayne Slabaugh snd Mrs. Orien Hall, all of Nappanee. They presented a skit on “Hello Dolly”. The theme for the evening was “An Old Fashioned Evening” which was very appropriately carried out in decorations, music and refreshments. The entrance to the temple depicted an old fashioned living room, complete with rag rug, rocking chain, and Bible, all antiques. The chapter room had an old general store with antique glassware and a miniature living room with antique child’s rocking chair and doll. The dining room was also decorated in the theme with the chairman of the social committee, Mrs. Glen Treesh, being dressed for the occasion. Mrs. C. D. Barnes was pianist for the evening with music going back to “The Good Old Days”. The social committee assisting Mrs. Treesh were Mr. and Mrs. Bill Little, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Gansert, Mrs. Evar Troup, Mrs. Howard Haab, Mrs. Burris Sharp, Mrs. Robert Rassi, Mrs. Lark Becker, Mrs. Lyle Childs and Mrs. James Longfellow. The next stated meeting will be Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 7:30 p.m. Saint Martin de Porres Sodality Elects Officers ‘ At the regular monthly meeting recently of the Women’s Sodality of Saint Martin de Porres church of Syracuse the following officers were elected: President — Mrs. Jerry Johnson Vice president — Mrs. Neil Farrell Secretary — Mrs. Joe Morganthaler Rev. Eugene Zimmerman opened and closed the meeting which was held in the church parish house. Plans were discussed for the Christmas bazaar and each member is to furnish a Christinas gift to the state school for the retarded at Fort Wayne. There were 35 members present.
