Billed as the “Biggest and Best in Northern Indiana” the 51st annual Kosciusko county fair will come alive Monday on the grounds in Warsaw and continue through Saturday. The official opening is at 7 p.m. and is followed by the 1-H dress review and the presentation of tenure awards at 8 p.m. 1-llers play a big part in the county fair each year as they exhibit hundreds of items and compete for top honors. The best exhibits in each category are chosen to represent the county at the state fair which will lie held later in the month in Indianapolis. The annual livestock auction held on Thursday is one of the leading t-H auctions in the state and brings bidders from all over the state to the grounds. August Is Upon Us... My. how the months do fly! August is upon us and so is fair time —the county fairs are soon to begin and the state fair will be held in Indianapolis August 25 through September 4. August is sandwich month and it’s baek-tfs-bowling month. Many of the area leagues will soon begin to make plans for the new season. This is the week of clowns — it’s to provide a change of pace and spread humor on the American scene. Laughter, the clown club of America says, is the best medicine. Mets Defeat Cards; By 30 to 12; Cubs In First Place Last week’s baseball results at Syracuse have been given as follows: T-Bali In T-ball play, the Mets defeated the Cards by a score of 30 to 12. Standings show the Cubs in first place with a 2-0 record. Mets in second with a 2-1 record and the Cards in third with a <Ki record. Minor Lea Curs In Minor League play, the Lions defeated the bank 5-4 to hold their unseated season. The women’s organizations and area farmers also hold exhibits on the fair grounds during the week. The merchants’ building gets “bigger and better” each year. The queen’s contest is another of the annual events which help to make the Kosciusko county fair just a little bit bigger and just a little bit better. Penny votes are collected with the money going to the county speech and hearing aid fund. The girl with the most pennies collected is crowned on the final night of the fair. Amusements, shows and .rides are also to be found as are entertainment acts. So. come one, come all—let’s go to the fair ! everybody to look at the bright side of things; loosen up facial muscles and put on a hftppy face. Ben Franklin celebrated his birthday on August 20 and several presidents including Lyndon Johnson were bom in this month. President Johnson was born August 27. 1908. Herbert C. Hoover. 31st president, was born on August 10, 1874, and Benjamin Harrison. 23rd president, was born on August 20. 1838. In New Mexico they hold a com dance and in Maine they hold a seafood festival. The Cheyenne river fair and rodeo is held August 21-31 on the reservation in South Dakota.

Swim Meet To j Be Held In Nappanee A swim meet between Syracuse and Nappanee will be held Friday. Aug. 4. 11)0 meet, beginning at 6 j p.m.. will be held at the Nappanee pool in St offer park. Students from the Syracuse swimming program will race against Nappanee swimmers according to their age and sex. ■The 23 meter races are breast, j free-style, side and racing back strokes. A free-style and a medley relay will complete the schedule of events. The public is invited. There is no charge for admission. Bob Wile* And Eldon Byler Win Championship Bob Wiles of Syracuse is the new mid-season champion of the New ; Paris speedway in the flyer class after taking the 50-lapper last week j end He passed Leroy Skiles of Walkerton on the 35th lap and stayed out in front to win. Eldon Byler of LaGrange was the winner in the 50-lap faster super class. Races will continue through September at the nearby quartermile oval.
TO MARRY AUGUST 26—Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Biller of r 4 Syracuse announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter. Glenda Kay, to George Douglas Lung, son of Mr. and Mrs, William Lung of r 4 Syracuse. Miss Biller is a student at Syracuse high school. Her fiance is a graduate of Syracuse high school and Is employed by Regent Trailer Company. Syracuse. An August 26 wedding is planned by the couple.
Babe Ruth Team Loses In Opening Game Os Tourney The Babe Ruth team of Syracuse was eliminated from, the tourney on Monday night by Rome City. The local nine were guilty of committing nine errors which gave Rome City > the victory. Syracuse led 7-2 after innings j despite some; early errors. In the ; bottom of the fourth, Rome City scor- j ed five runs on only one hit to tie the score. Syracuse jumped ahead 8-7 again after five innings, but Rome City ’ scored three in the sixth to lead 10-8 ' and the Jackets were unable to catch up in the top of the seventh as they could manage only one run. \ Jon Coy pitched all the way for j the Jackets giving up six hits and ; four earned runs. He struck out five j and walked four. Imes was the winning pitcher for Rome City. Jon Coy and Steve Tatman each collected three high and Steve Hoover and Dave Webster two for the Jackets. This is the last game for the j j team this year. The boys completed the season with a four win, six loss j ; record. - — NEWLYWEDS RESIDING IN SYRACUSE Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Pleteher j have returned from a wedding trip to New York and are living at 706 1 - ; south Huntington street, Syracuse. They were married July 1 in St. Paul's Lutheran church at Middlebury. Pastor Fred Fiedler of Bethany Lutheran at South Bend offici--1 ated. He was assisted by Wiiliam G Arbaugh, pastor of St. Paul's. The bride is the former Rosa Lee Kurtz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pleteher is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Pleteher, also of Middlebury. Mrs. Pleteher is a 1967 graduate I of Manchester college and her husband of Goshen college. This fail Airs. Pleteher will be an elementary teacher in the Lakeland Community schools at Syracuse and Mr. Pleteher will teach at Milford. Patrick Money Receives Commission FORT DEYENS, Mass —Patrick E. Money HI, 20. whose parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roland E. Money, live on | r 4 Syracuse, was commissioned a ! second lieutenant in the U. S. army upon completion of reserve officers’ training corps summer camp at Fort Devens July 28. Money completed all his ROTC re- | quirements and academic requirements for his college degree at Norwich university at Northfield, Vt, prior to his six weeks of training at summer camp. Trauung was given in the use of weapons, field communications, map and compass reading, first aid and other military subjects necessary to the army officer. The camp also gave him the opportunity to apply knowledge gained in the classroom to a practical field test. Honor Carol Chambers At Bridal Shower Miss Card Chambers, August 6 bride-elect of Alvin Haab of Milford, was complimented at a bridal shower Wednesday evening, July 26, at the home of Mrs. Ronald Smith at Dewart Lake. .Assisting Mrs. Smith were Miss Debra Levernier of Milford and Mrs Robert Kitson of Ligonier. Appropriate bridal games were played and refreshments of cherrydelight, crackers and pink lemonade were served to 15 guests. Mrs. Denny Cori won the door prize of perfume. CHAMBERS, diaries Allen Mr. and Mrs. Gary Chambers of Wakarusa are the parents of a baby boy born July 19 in the Goshen hospital. Charles Allen tipped the scales at seven pounds, ten ounces. The Chamberses have another son, James Calvin, who is two. Charles was born the birthday of his grandfather, James Chambers of r 1 Milford. Mr. and Mrs. James Chambers are the paternal grandparents, and the maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Weaver of Wakarusa.
List Results Os Little League Play At Milford Results of Little League play at Milford have been announced as follows: T-Ball In T-Ball play this week, Phend and Brown defeated Walter Drug 33 to 17. Standings show the following results: Farm Bureau 4-0 Phend and Brown 2-3 Walter Drug 1- 4 J Little League Monday evening Campbell's Sox I defeated Berk's Orioles 9 - 3. The starting pitcher for the Sox was Mark Sorensen and for the Orioles, John Fisher. The most valuable player for the winning team was Lyle Slabaugh and the losing team. Don Beer. Doubles were hit by Benny Walbeser. Mark Shearer, Craig Sorensen, all for Brocks. Mark Shearer also had a triple. Brad Taylor hit a double for the Dodgers.
