Outdoors Beckoning All To Wide World Os Summer Fun In 1967
By John Fredericks Today most Americans Stepped outdoors. No one will argue that. After all, to work, walking to tnt store, Jftl cup of flour all involve outdoor activity. Stt*pping into the great outdoors, however, is an animal of another hue. Call it semantics if you Eke, but the “great" outdoors is that i ar a of enjoyment which takes you' out o. t..e routine, regimented and I even too-convenient way of life, j This is the outdoors manifest in woods, water and fresh air. Millions vs Americans are be- j coming closer to the great out-i doors. Attribute part of the interest to economies. This affluent society has more disposable income to devote to off-time activities. Attribute a lion’s share of the [ popularity of the great outdoors to I the fellows who have designed products geared to recreation and to the far sighted government officials and interested laymen whj work hard to maintain large and small hunks of land and water for public use. Back to Nature! Outdoor activities run all the way J from a back yard barbeque to skin diving in the Bahamas, and most of i the basic activities are interlocking. Although boating in itself is a fulfilling recreation, many boaters use their craft to get to ideal picnic-|' camping areas. Likewise, many campers purchase their equpmvat to give them a temporary home [ near the water’s edge to increase their boating fun Flying airplans or driving four . wheel drive “go anywhere" vehicles — both growing recreations — enable outdoor devotees to cover hugh distances quickly or get to I remote locations easily for fishing, camping, boating and carefree relaxation. (.'amping equipment manufact-' urers have discovered the formula for producing merchandise that ofa “back to earth" feeling while maintaining enough conveniences and portability to appeal to the ladies as well as to tin? less than rug- ‘

I ged outdoorsmen. Boating equipment is dependable ‘ and easy to maintain. Spin casting has taken ths embarrassing and annoying backlash out of fishing, i Plastic containers, insulated chests ' j ard jugs and fool-proof portable li as’ stoves take the cook from the [kitchen without taking the kitchen 1 from the cook. All the Conveniences So y; i waist to fly. A five cfoEar 1 i bill will put you in th?' driver’s seat jto get acquainted. Land vehicles ' for outdoor recreation, from truckcamper units and roomy superI station wagons to small four-wheel : drive bugs, combine all the tough- ; ness you expect with comfort and economy you might not expect. Trie giant clothing industi-y has become outdoor conscious, too, s to market apparel for ah acti\i;:es which Ok durable and fashionable. Features like nylon zippers to combat corrosion and permanent water proofing keep the, woods and water buffs smiling. Fmd a camp ground and chances are the service industries will have ice machines. ’ laundromats and ■ ft-drink dispensers in the area. Need a new spark plug for the outboard or a guide to local attractions. you'll fmd why the term “filling station" is antique and, “service station" is the name. Not all recreational land is governm nt owned. In addition to the stat? and national forests. parts and campgrounds, many companies and individuals turn over their pr vat lands for public use: some free, others for nominal charge. Many tilhbdr and paper companies, far example, even publish maps for people who wish to camp, hike or i p..nic on their premises. Now a Stampede! ‘ There is no longer a ‘trend toward outdoor recreation,” one manufacturer of equipment asi sorts, “it is now a stampede.” “People are becoming more sophisticated about equipment, too.” ; he adds, "Most families who start in an outdoor activity with budget or min mum equipment soon move ■y t lugi.r q.i.i.ity gear with hej-
; ter accessories and conveniences.” Enjoyment of the great outdoors [has become as American as you-kixw-what kind of pie.
