Safe Boating Tips LAFAYETTE — Even a capsized boat can save your life, says Dick Willsey, extension safety specialist iat Purdue university. Remember, the boat will float : and can support you in the water i until rescuers arrive. Hang on to the canoe or boat to save yourself. Having a life preserver for each person in the boat is required. But wait, just having them in a storage chest or under the seat isn’t enough. Put life jackets on all small children and adults who can’t swim. You need to know more than how to start a'motorized boat to operate one safely, Willsey points out. Take a little basic training in handling, : operation and care. Learn the safe■ty rules, too. Consider the design and size of your boat — do not overi power it with too large a motor. Be careful with gasoline! Da not i smoke while fueling or handling; ' gasouine. Remember that gasoline fumes may collect in the bottom of the boat. If your boat does not have bilge ventilators, think about installing them for added safety. While wu are in a boat, stay seated — do not stand up or ciiange places while you’re in the middie of the lake. Too much movement will upset the boat.
