Prescription For Winter
This week the tune was changed from. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow —to it’s June in January. And while we hate to be a prognosticator of gloom, the balmy weather will, if it hasn’t already, take a sudden change for the'worse. And when it does, we can make another quick change from skateboards to ice skates and from short sleeves to sweaters. Indiana weather teaches Hoosiers to be adaptable, if nothing else. During the cold weather last week there were lots of ice skaters about, trying out new Christmas gear and new ice on ponds and creeks. . The usual words of winter caution are in order for the next cold spell, particularly where youthful skaters are involved.* Ice. besides being slippery, can be dangerously deceptive. Children should be advised to 'skate only on small, supervised areas of water, such as pools, ponds, flooded hollows, or the shallow parts of creeks. For safety's sake, they should skate
Schricker National Lakeshore
Senator Birch Bayh (D-Ind.) proposed today changing the name of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore to the Henry F. Schricker National Ijakeshore. Bayh introduced the proposal injlhe Senate as an amendment to P.L. 89-761, the law establishing the Lakeshore, to name the new national park in honor of Indiana’s only two-term governor who died last December 28. Bayh said that Governor Schricker became “a legend in his time.” Born of immigrant parents in 1883, Schricker, Bayh said, “was a man of the people—one who

only when the ice is at least two inches thick. For large groups, it should be at least four inches thick. Os course, they should never skate alone, or skate near open water. Snowy ice and sun-rotted ice could crumble under weight. It’s a fun thing to do, skating. But it should be done with'care and caution. So should winter driving. A change in driving habits is imperative to safe driving .in icy weather. Fast starts lead to spinning tires and a skidding getaway. Better to accelerate slowly to develop more positive traction. Fast braking is also dangerous; it can cause a vehicle to skid dangerously out of control. Applying pressure to the brakes gradually will bring the car to a safer stop. This means, of course, the motorist must start to slow down sooner than under normal circumstances. Keeping a cautious eye on the other driver is also important. Though you have vour car under control, the other driver may be skidding and sliding through the intersection. — Zionsville Times -
