Surplus Fund is Topic At Assembly By Julie Connolly » Eighty Syracuse students were; privileged to catch Senator Birch Bayh in a brief speech' at the state legislature Thursday, Jan. 19. The students, juniors and seniors I of Syracuse high school journeyed to Indianapolis via bus. An added surprise gave spice to the outing when ■ topped at Elwood for breakfast. Senator Vance Hartke met the group and shook hands. , Their first stop was in the Senate chamber where they were ushered to ! seats in the gallery'. After a few first readings on bills, a floor fight developed on the surplus funds, a subject of vital interest to' every taxpaver in the state. Thequestion in debate at that time by the two poll- j tical factions was whether to divert the funds to property ta< relief or i social relief The lively discussion lasted until Senator Bayh entered. A recess was granted to allow him to j deliver a short speech. Senator Bayh told them. “1 am glad to be back where I gained my experience. It was invaluable to me and I wouldn’t trade it for anything”. The students then stopped at the Supreme Court and later went to the. law library’. Sandy's Sidelines By Sandra Yeager Our guys had a littlj bad luck last week end with Bremen and Triton, but they came roaring back to win over Cromwell unmercifully. The Bteam also looked awfully good Both Varsity and B-teams were playing our benches during the closing quarter Our freshmen boys looked real good over Cromwell’s B-team. An outstanding longshot was made by Roh Clevenger al the half of' the j varsity Throwing over his shoulder from the center line, Rob made a j once-in-a-year shot* ! It seems to me that a little more j courtesy could be paid to our flag ’ while 'The Star-Spangled Banner" ’ is being played; jxuticularly in the upper rows of the cheerblock. Lots of ■ people from many countries would give their lives to have as much freedom as our song demonstrates, that our nation does. The band gave a marching exhibition during last week end’s Saturdaygame with Bremen. Our band is slowly, but surely getting to look and sound like a real music organization. Good-luck to all those people who are going to the instrumental contest this coming Saturday. Vocal contest is February 4. I’m sure our representatives will make a good showing. Last Monday night the FTA met at the home of Cindy Felts. Mr. Slavens was guest speaker. He gave us information about college life and warned us of possible difficulties with which we might be confronted The FTA and National Honor Society are planning a joint trip to Saint Mary’s college and Notre Dame university. Plans are being made for an April FTA sponsored dance." The prospective name for the dance is “Hawkins’ Hobo Hop”. Your guess is as good as mine to what it’s going to be like.

Lakeknd Youth Hews By Bud Smith First of all folks, the Youth Center will be closed Wednesday and Thursday due to exams. I know you are all anxious to study real hard for these tests, so this will give you the opportunity. Our dance. Saturday night was a real dandy, folks. We had one of the finest bands I have heard for a long time. It consists of four boys and one mighty pretty girl. They have an electric piano, electric organ. bass guitar and drums and above all else a whale of a lot of talent. This combo is called the “Royal V". If you get a change to hear them, don’t miss out. They will be back here on Mareh 4. We are going ahead with plans for our Winter Festival dance at the Youth Center with the Youth governing board working very hard on it. So far we know it will be on the 18th of February. It will be coats, white shirts and ties for the boys and dressy dresses for the girls. We also know we have one of the finest bands in the territory to play for us. Who else The "T k?s“ of course. I feel we are very fortunate to have been able to book this combo for this extra special dance. We will have a queen contest 'at this affair also, and will have more information on this after our next meeting. Don’t forget gang, after the game with Ligonier this Friday we will
hare a dance at the Youth Center until 11:30. Don’t miss this one folks, I have the “Tikes” on the hook for this one too. Keep watching this column for development on our Winter Festival dance. I will keep you abreast
