The head of the American Farm Bureau Federation, perhaps the largest farm organization in the country, has asked for an end to government farm controls. Forty years experience with such controls, he* said, has shown that “government supply management in agriculture does not work.” He added that one of the chief causes of mass-starvation in India is price controls imposed by the Indian government. The theory of the government’s program of controls in this country has been to protect farmers against the depressing effect of over-abundance. Whatever justification there may have been for such controls in the past no

Applies For Legion Team Semi-State Tournament The American Legion Baseball team sponsored by Rodman Ford Sales of Ligonier appears to be one of the best possibilities as host for the northeast Indiana semi-state tournament next August. The results of the meeting at Indianapolis on January 22 have not been announced but the bid for the local team to host the tournament is under consideration. The final announcement as cto who receives the tournament is under the jurisdiction of the state central committee and the executive committee. John Hagen, manj ager of the local team, is a memI ber not only of the executive group ! but has one of the 11 votes on the : central committee. The. other comi mi t tee members seem to be friendly toward the local request. I The chief advantage to the local ! team in hosting such a tournament i would be the added amount of rest rather than travel that they would have, and it gives the local team a much better chance in the state tournament. The fatigue from travel and being away from home has contributed greatly in the upset of two Or three local teams that had a chance at the state crown, and with the especially strong team for 1967, the local groups are hoping to host the 1967 semi-state. Rodman Ford Sales, one of the sponsors, has pledged whole-hearted support not only by its sponsorship but by its contribution of an automobile to be given away opening day and in any other manner that might be feasible. far back, 1917 was a good year—Jeannette Rankin became the first woman to serve as a member of congress and the first Pulitzer prizes were awarded. On January 10 the nation was saddened when it learned of the death of Col. William F. (Buffalo Bill) Cody. Songs of the day were “The Bells of St. Mary’s,” “For Me and My Gal.” “Hail. Hail, the Gang’s All Here,” “Over There,” “Smiles” and “Tiger Rag.” Remember 1917?
longer exists. Rapid population increases in the V. S. and throughout the world have ended the age of surpluses. As the Farm Bureau spokesman suggested, the government should now devote its attention to production, marketing research and promotion of international trade. The time is rapidly approaching when every available acre of tillable land will have to be used for food and fiber production. The inherent efficiency of the American farmer will be needed as never before. It should be recognized once and for all that a free market in agriculture, as elsewhere, is the most productive market.
