their first term of service this and will be at the conference from Sunday through Tuesday. His' father, Wilbur, was pastor of the Grace Bible church in Syracuse for a number of years.
My Slate' - (Continued from page 6> convevors of microbes the slate was doomed. .Along with it have gone certain slate games, such as ‘tit, tat. toe. three in a row’, and ‘round I go. round I go”, and all in all the child who has never owned a slate and pencil has missed one of the joys of the juvenile period.” In some parts of Indiana slates were used well up into the 20th i century so there are many living persons who are well acquainted with them. Matter of fact we saw ’ some for sale in a gift shop in Tipton, Ind., just the other day. ‘ IF ONE COULD CHOOSE J If one had the privilege of pick- ■ ing a period of time in which to I live, this should be it. No other j time in history has offered as much to so many, and this is in spite of die atom's potential threat of mutual and worldwide destruction. In :no other period of history have there been so many material comi forts within the reach of so many ! people all over the world. And tliis truth cannot be denied because the ' problem remains of finding sensible j practical w r ays to spread these I material gains into more and more ! areas. . In no other period of history have i there been such widespread edu- * cational opportiuiities for so many people, without regard to their so- ; cial or financial status. And the fact I that there are millions yet to be j reached does not take away from : what- has already been done. i In no other per?ad of history have ’ there been the possibilities for perI sonal freedom for so many people, i The fact that the Communist colos- ; sus cireumscribes freedom in huge [ land masses of die world does not i blot- out the growth of freedom almost everywliere else. In no other period of history have men organized so competent- | ly to promote health, to relieve suffering. and to help people to their ! own feet so that they can work out i their own material needs. That so i much remains to be done only emphasizes the vastness of tbit prob; , lem. It does not question the quality jof tlie effort. In no other period of history has ! it been so easy for people of one. I nation to learn that those of ani other are just as human, just as interested in peace and the good ! dimgs of life as themselves. And : the existence of walls of terror an#l I curtains of hate are only a tempor- | ary throwback to less civilized i tunes. In no other period of history has there been less suspicion, distrust, and tension among various religious beliefs and creeds. And this is a great gain even though men of different faiths may need the diversity of religious organization and expression to satisfy their individual consciences. In no other period of history has there been sucii a feeling that education will lead to understanding, that mutual need will require sensible restraint, that growing goodI will may eventually draw all nations closer together in bonds of true friendship and helpfulness. And it is because of this that the fearsome threat of nucledr annihilation does not deter people frem working toward a finer and happier world for all. In a spirit of ecumenisfn two clergymen of different faiths became close friends. Even so they often disagreed on religious questions. Following a heated argument on an obscure theological point, one of them said, “That’s all right. We will just agree to disagree. The’ important thing is that we are both doing the Lord’s work — you in your way and I in His.” JI j ah cross Jw BLOOD SAVES
