Hoosier Justice In D. C.

Dear Editor: Hoosier justice was administered to a District of Columbia sightseeing tours cabbie by two Kosciusko county women during their \Tsit to Washington. D. C. this week. When the cabbie collected in advance more than the going rate for the tour planned (sl4 instead of sl2) nothing was said. When he failed to carry out his part of the agreement and missed several of the buildings to be included on the tour and finally lied to them about the distance that they would have to Walk to get to their destination at the conclusion of the tour, they did not yet j know what he was doing. The man was obviously now in a ' hurry to get some of the rush hour I traffic cab fares as the government workers left their places of work, and did not care what happened I to these Hoosiers. After a good night’s sleep and 3 j trip the next morning through the | replica of the “Santa Maria’’ sail-1 ing vessel berthed in the Washing-1

ton Cliannel they decided to take a cab back to the Washington Monument where they had met subject sight seeing tour cabbie the previous day. Their efforts were not in vain. White they were talking to the Colorde Dispatcher who is in charge of the sightseeing cabs subject cabbie drove up and seeing them drove on past. They waited out of sight about five minutes and he came back, parked his cab and came in. They told him tliat they wanted to take ancther tour today. He replied “After what I charged you yesterday.” They said “Yes”. Sa they worked out the tour they were interested in (he was nervous and jerkey and of course the colored dispatcher was in stitches knowing what had happened the previous day and what was now happening). The cabbie wanted to collect his money in advance. They said “No”. “Not in advance”. “We trusted you yesterday now you must trust us today.”

THE MAIL-JOURNAL

First port of call was. the houss where Presid ?nt Abraham Lincoln died. The girls got out of the cab, thanked and d smissed th? cabbi? — paid him nothing — told h : m they would hav? no further us? for his services today and CMtinued their visit in Washington to such places as Ford Th rater arrows tb-* street which is being reconstructed to its original form, th? Fed—?’ Bureau of Investigation and th ? Smithsonian Institution. Most people would not have tak°n the time to effectively get the message back to the overzealous cabbie. We in Washington feel that this man received a lesson far superior to a formal complaint registered to his company or harsh words administered to him. He will long remember Mary Jane Green Deardorf and Pauline Hartman from Indiana and their administration of H-josier Justice. N. C. Fick Arlington, Va*

STOP THE QUESTIONS A little old lady being examined for jury duty in a small country town was asked if she knew the defense lawyer. “Yes,” she snapped, “he’s a crook.” “And the plaintiff’s lawyer?” “Yes, he’s a crook, too.” With that the judge called both lawyers over for a conference. He whispered, “If you ask her if she knows me I’ll fine you for contempt of court.” —American Legion Magazine.
