Milford And Syracuse Both Win Two During Past Week
The Syracuse Yellow Jackets were winners in games played this week •S were the MJ ford Trojans. the host Manchester Squires to grab their fourth victory in seven outing- The Jackets lead by 18 going into the final stanza but with the hot shooting of Wolfe, who scored 15 last quarter points, came to within five of Syracuse and lost 67 to 62. The Jackets had four men to score in double figures and we led by Rob Clevenger s 19 points. Tom Thornburg followed with 16 as he made 10 out of 10 from tin? foul lane in addition to three field goals. Thornburg was trailed closely by Brad Bauer s 15 and John Wortinger’s 11. The Squires had two num in double :. • - Wcife with a ■, ■ with 12. The Yellow Jackets, determined to stay above .500. jumped to an early lead ami were not challenged ; until the fourth quarter. The Jackets led by six at the end of the
first quarter. 14-8 and added to the lead to take a comfortable 34-18 margin at half time. The Jackets added two points to their lead by the end of three and led 50 to 32. Then came the quarter when Manchester didn’t make too many mistakes with a full court press and they pulled within five with about two minutes to go and from there on they played even ball to the end. Despite a 14 point effort by Curt Stucky the Syracuse Junior varsity went down to a 52-37 defeat. The Trojans and Argos held a close match all the way until the fourth quarter when Milford was only four points ahead of the Dragons. the score 54-50. Milford then went ahead scoring nine more and Argos stood cold until the final buzzer. Dan Brown was Milford's leading scorer with 21 points. Dan managed 65 per cent of his shots. Ned Speicher came in with 16 points. Ted Speicher 11, and Park Phend with 10. Phend and Wirthrich tied -in rebounding with 16 each. Argos high sebrers were Hardesty. This game was a real “fun”, if I may use the term for the Milford squad. Ned Speicher opened up and nailed 37 points. Most of Ned’s shots were out and from the weak ■ side. Ned hit 17 of 23 for 74 per cent. Cromwell didn't apparently catch on to the Milford sneek shot 1 which Speicher held through out ! the game. Dan Brown came in scoring with 18 and Park Phend with 14. Milford had a good night hitting 39 of 83 attempts on field goals. Milford also held Cromwell to a distinct four rebounds in the first half to Milford’s 23. In the totals Milford held them to 17 while we piled on 57 at the end of the game. Cromwell’s leading scorer was Loveless with 16 followed by Stump with 15 and Vanhorn with 11. Clarence Eby Bow's 300 Game Clarence Eby of 406 north Harrison street. Syracuse, bowled a perfect game of 300 Monday night while bowling in the county league at the Wawasee Bowl, south of Syracuse. For a per game Mr. Eby had to bowl 12 strikes in a row. His other games were 211 and 201 for a 712 series. Eby has a 201 average. Leon Vance Has 780 Series Leon Vance of Syracuse bowled a 780 series Sunday at the Wawasee Bowl during a match game between Pilcher's Shoes of Syracuse and the .American State Bank team of Ligonier. He bowled games of 290. 213 and 277. Goshen Upsets Warsaw In Game Os The Year The battle of the giants — Warsaw vs. Goshen — was played at Goshen last night, and the Goshen Redskins rode over the Warsaw Tigers 63 to 59. Warsaw, rated fifth in the slate and 10th in the nation, never girt the lead from the opening gun. Both teams sported eight players six feet tall and over among the 11 on their card. Goshen led at all stops: 11 to 7 at the end of the first quarter. 34 to 23 at hall time, and 48 to 38 at the end oi the third quarter.
