Mrs. Benson’s Father Celebrates 100th Birthday Mr. and Mrs Oscar Benson of r 4 Syracuse returned recently from a i trip to mid-western Canada. The high point of the trip was at Swan I River. Manitoba. where Mrs. Ben- , son's father, Robert Cowan, celebrated his 100th birthday. In 1899. Mr. Cowan left his birthplace, in Ontario where he operated a shingle mill, and went west to i Swan River valley where he chose a homestead and built a log cabin. When the railroad arrived the following year he returned to Ontario

and brought back his wife and two children. Also from Ontario he brought a threshing outfit, one of the first in the valley, with which he did considerable custom work. A grandson continues to farm the original homestead. Mr. Cowan has 12 grandchildren, j 23 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. I Mr. and Mrs. Cowan retired from the farm in 1928, and in 1962 moved to the Swan Valley Lodge, where Mr. Cowan still resides. Mrs. Cowan died in 1962 at the age of 95. Still in fairly good health.
