Nov. 23 — Our §9 Lady of the Lake Seminary received « national recognition this week when ||] it was awarded a charter in Mu |1 Alpha Theta, international high » school and junior college matheH matics club. The announcement was made by I Dr. Harold V. Huneke, national secfl retary-treasurer, who is an associate | professor of mathematics at the Unifl versity of Oklahoma where the na- ■ tional office is located. W Only those schools with excellent | mathematics programs can earn iiS membership in the club since all i;fl courses in mathematics and the qualifications of the mathematics §g faculty and students are examined §| in detail by the club’s governors and iifl officers. To be eligible for membership, minimum requirements are that a > 8 student must have completed with ; I distinction at least four semesters ■ ■ of college preparatory mathematics S and be enrolled in the fifth semester, g He also must have an overall grade g of at least a “B” in all of his high 3 school work. g “Membership in Mu Alpha Theta S is the highest honor possible for a g high school or junior college student g of mathematics.” Huneke said. “Club g activities consist of work in areas g of mathematics not usually covered S in the classroom.” Mu Alpha Theta was founded in I 1957 at the University of Oklahoma fl and has grown to more than 1,000 | clubs in all 50 states and Canada, | England.
