Syracuse Rotary Hears Interesting Talk On Russia Monday Noon
Syracuse Rotarians, meeting at the Pickwick Lounge Monday noon, beard a most interesting and enlightening talk on Soviet Russia by a speaker who showed himself to be a keen observer of Russian life. Dr. Howard J. Brown, for 18 years associated with the Cleveland Heights, Ohio, Church of the Saviour, was the guest of Varner Chance. A noted minister, writer, traveler and lecturer, he visited Russia in 1956 and again during July and August of the past summer. With him was Dr. Wayne Paulen of Warsaw. Shows Color Slides Dr. Brown spoke for 15 minutes, then showed color slides he had taken during both trips. Some ol his remarks dealt with comparing Russia in 1956 with Russia He said he found very few people have private cars in Russia, but that there are taxis, buses and trucks in short supply. He and Dr. Paulen made a street corner count, and found less than 10 per cent of the vehicles were of a private na-

ture. He had high praise for the Moscow metro system (or subway) which was elaborately appointed. They had huge chandelieres, stained glass windows, works of art on the walls and were spotless in all respects. These are a Russian high point, and all natives wish to impress visitors with their metro, he commented. However, Dr. Brown found apartment buildings with narrow stairways, unworkable elevators and leaky roofs and windows. He found the country short on what he termed “material things.” He praised the University of Moscow. Its main building complex has 3,000 classrooms and laboratories. He said he found the people on the street well dressed and well . fed more so in 1966 than in 1956. Religion has been practically a- [ balished. Dr. Brown commented, with Orthodox Russian - the main , religion. The city of Moscow with : eight million people, has three Baptist churches. He and Dr. Paul-

People Friendly Dr. Brown said the Russian people were friendly everywhere they went and he was uninhibited in their picture taking. He said they appeared impervious to Russian propaganda that Americans were all war-mongering capitalists. He found the people healthy and wholesome. In reply to questions, Dr. Brown said if .America was waiting for Russians to throw over their system of government, we would have a long wait ahead ot us. Dr. Brown was introduced Varner Chance.
