fCHJZINJCWI AROUND ' J Some Syracuse organization, or organizations, should pick up the cudgel. We’re told the Syracuse elementary PT A has decided to drop its annual Halloween parade, for simple lack of interest and attendance. The Halloween carnival, however, will be held on Saturday. Oct. 22. This is the only money-making project of the elementary PTA. It would be a shame to see the Halloween parade abandoned. Where has the spirit gone? Let’s hear from the galleries. Mrs. Jay Brower is president of the Syracuse elementary PTA and inquiries may be addressed to her. Wouldn’t it be nice if two or three organizations revived a downtown parade. with prizes in a number of categories? How about it? • • • Most people don’t realize the import of the Lakeland school board's letting of construction contracts for the new elementary additions at Syracuse and Milford. The four Syracuse first grade classes (99 students in all * are attending classes at Oakwood Park auditorium building. Several years ago, elementary- coordinator Ed Speer read a “paper” before the Syracuse PTA in which he told of the critical room situation coming up in the Syracuse elementary school. People were listening, but it takes time to get such a program under way. But here it is upon us, says Mr. Speer and we have this acute situation. Teaching the four first grade classes, incidentally, are Mrs. Jo Dieterly, Mrs. Helen Knapp, Mrs. Eloyce Van Lue and Miss Patricia Shoemaker. « « « A surprise birthday party was held at the office of township trustee Matty Jones Friday afternoon for Mrs. Don Ruple of Goshen. She is former member of trustee Jones’ office force. Attending were Mrs. Bob Hulley, Mrs. Paul Lantz. Mrs. Richard Miller, Mrs. Bill Hess, Mrs. Chet Me Cuen, Mrs. Dale Sparklin. Arnold Pfingst, Bart Cox and trustee Jones. How many birthdays was it? “Why 48, what did you think?” says Katie, matter-of-factly.
Sportswearman Tom Prickett is out looking for another member to his suit club. His club, this year with its largest number of members at 199, stands one short of his desired goal of 200! ♦ • • Lakeland school board candidates have been given tentative dates of October 13, 18 and 20 for a meeting with members of the Lakeland faculty. Purpose of the meeting: Not plain. * • * Our phone rang, and Mrs. Hugh (Barb) Neer was on the line. She wanted it known that her dad, Glen Longenecker, was not dismissed as Syracuse principal, but tendered his resignation. OK! CMC! V * * Mrs. Everett (Louise) Crow of Syracuse Hardware is certainly coy about it all. She is wearing a patch on her forehead near the hairline. To such questions as “How does the other fellow look?” she only says, “You'll never know.” Meanwhile she sure is enjoying the rhubarb. ♦ ♦ ♦ | Polls taken in the county, of which no one is sure of their authenticity, show GOP candidates behind, or so the story goes. At any rate, it has been sufficient to spur the candidates on, give them reason to tour the hustings. Turkey Creek GOP files are planning a chicken barbecuue to be held Saturday, Oct. 22. at the scout cabin, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Chance to introduce candidates and to raise a buck or two. Mrs. W. E. Long is planinng a reception for sheriff candidate Carl Latta at her home on Sunday, Oct. 30. word is. » * » Mary Kimble enjoyed a birthdaylast Wednesday and was surprised at her Kale Island Beacon by a group of friends. Hubby Johnnie topped off a nice day by giving her a monogrammed mink stole. * » ♦ Matty Jones has issued a confidential letter to party faithfuls, which they may use as conversation in boosting his candidacy for trustee. It points to a good fire department, a lower tax rate for Turkey Creek township (while the countyrate has gone up), and a decrease of about 17 per cent in insurance rate due to a rerating by the state rating bureau. He said this comes about through his cooperation with the Cromwell and North Webster fire departments to better sene the outlying areas in the township with fire protection. ♦ ♦ ♦ Heard by a Syracuse football fan 'following the Milford-Syracuse game (Saturday afternoon: “Our boys, got

a lesson in beef.” Commenting on getting the names of Jack Elam and Bill Brammer turned around under the page 1 photo last week, Betty Brammer said, “I didn’t like that. My husband is better looking than Jack.” Any comment. Jack? * ♦ ♦ There is considerable speculation that the state will convert the closed fish hatchery on Lake Wawasee into a public bathing beach and picnic grounds. When the word was out, there was local concern that the land could be put to better use by letting Purdue university establish a biological research center there, similar to the one Earlham college has at Dewart Lake. This is all quiet now, but we can look for an announcement from the state in the not too distant future.
