Syracuse Wins County Baseball Crown
By Steve Wagner Syracuse clinched the 1966 county baseball championship by downing second place North Webster 7 to 3 on the winner’s diamond. With only one game remaining, the Jackets are two games ahead of their nearest opponent This was a real team effort for the . boys. Five different players had two hits and there were many fine fielding plays. Bob Pilcher had a double and a homer. Max Brodeers. Steve Wagner, Rob Smith, and Rob Clevenger all had two hits each. Rob Clevenger went all the way for the Jackets to record the win He gave up four hits, walked two and struck out six. Baker went all the way for North Webster and was handed the loss He gave up 12 hits while walking one and striking out four. Don Byrd In State PGA Tourney Don Byrd participated last week in the state PGA pro-member tourney held at the Otter Creek country’ chib at Columbus. He placed first in the pro-pro with a 68. He had Harry Lipscomb of Indianapolis as a partner. In the individual pro he was second with a two under par 70. In the three-man team Byrd was thin! with a 10 under par 62. In qualifying for the state PGA he made it to low 16 before being eliminated.

Jackets Second At Churubusco Invitational By Kermit Welty The Yellow Jackets, participating in the Churubusco invitational cross country meet for the first time last Friday, came home with second place honors. Although strong winds prevailed the times were all pretty good. Churubusco was the team winner with a total of 59 points. Syracuse finished only 22 points back with a team total of 81 points. Ashley was third and had a total of 108 points. Silkens of Churubusco led the pack and his team to victory. Wilkens’ time was a very’ fart 9:25. Kermit Welty led the Yellow Jackets and finished in sixth place with a time of 9.55. Ulf Postulka finished ninth in the meet and had a notable time of 10:04. Chris Busch, Dave Wicki.4rom and Tom Mullins came in within six seconds of each other in 'that order. Their times were Chris in 1012, Dave in 10:15 and Tom in 10:18. LADIES OF THE ROUND TABLE MEET The Syracuse Ladies of the Round Table did) met Monday with Mrs. Clayton Mock. There were 17 members and one guest, Mrs. Rhoda Mock, present. I President Mrs. Edgar Speer presided at the business meeting. The program consisted of a paper by Mrs. Melburn Rapp entitled “The Lady from India” and a paper by Miss Ethel Bowser “Lady Bird.” Refreshments w’ere served by the hostess. 2,250 Merit Scholarships were awarded, 1,700 of them by sponsors. Each Merit Scholarship is a fouryear award covering the undergraduate years of college. Each stipend is individually determined after the winners need is assessed. For the student already financially able to attend the college of his choice, the stipend may be as little as S4OO for four years. Those with higli need may receive the normal maximum of $6,000 or $1,500 per year. Winners choose their own colleges and courses of study.
