FALL FASHIONS FOR MEN ’ LAFAYETTE. — Men continue to grow in fasiiion awareness — and fall fashions for men show many trends. Socks, vests, suits and sport coat styles are changing. Mrs. Lois Gotwals, extension clothing specialist at Purdue university, says crew and sport socks are getting longer. Some of the new ones are as much as an inch higher on the leg — similar in style to dress socks. Longer socks prevent a gap between socks and trouser cuffs when a gentleman is sitting down. Vests are still "in” — whether they match or contrast with a suit. Vested suits are favorites both on campus and off. Still in the very traditional natural shoulder style, they will be worn with bright pastel
button-down shirts and boldly patterned ties this fall.
Sport coats look less like suit coats these days. Styles range from the natural shoulder to shaped hacking jacket types and are sparked by bold patters — from Madras to blanket plaids. Country styles include leather trims bellow pockets, open welt seams and colorful linings. The ever popular blazer is now appearing in tweeds and some bold plaids, with more pockets and sometimes double breasted styling. Outercoats of corduroy, wool, rawhide or suede, have the popular

shearling or shearling-look lining. Bush jackets, popular in beach and sportswear, will appear this fall in lined models. Many pockets are their appealing feature. Another popular trend in men’s fashions is the Western look — with Ponderosa shirts, rider jackets and levis in sueded and stretch denim as well as traditional blue jean frabic. Shirts should coordinate with suits or slacks. A dressy suit calls for a smart dress-up collar, whereas a casual shirt collar is better with casual clothes. Let the shirt determine the type
of tie worn — or not worn. Consider the tie’s pattern, color and fabric. Wear a conservative tie with a bold shirt, a bold one with a conservative shirt. Sport shirts, of course, don’t require a tie.
