REMEMBER .. . WHEN IT HAPPENED IN SYRACUSE ONE YEAR AGO Residents of Fascination Place, in the Enchanted Hills area, were I surprised when a ‘‘baby tornado” touched down there at 6 p.m. Friday. Several trailers were hit and a 65-foot antennea fell. During the storm Friday the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Van Hemert and the residence of Roy Caywood were struck by lightning. Robert L. Slavens, the new Syracuse higii school principal, moved Monday with his wife and family into the Colwell property on Harrison street. Terry Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Miller, received the Pro Deo et Patria Scouting award at services in the Grace Lutheran church Sunday. Barney Galloway, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Galloway of Lake Wawasee. recently enlisted in the United States air force and is at Lackland AFB Texas. FIVE YEARS AGO Tbe Syracuse-Wawasee Water Safety Program is planning a W’ater Carnival to be held Saturday, August 12. Roy Sarjent was presented a life membership •in the American Legion Post 223 in a very impressive ceremony Tuesday evening. Pad H. Moore of Monticello has been employed by the local board of education as assistant principal of the Syracuse high school. Martha Firestone, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Firestone will graduate from Parkview Methodist school of nursing at Fort Wayne, this week. Mr. and Mrs. Eli Shock, whq have lived on a farm near Syracuse for 60 years, had members of their family as guests honoring their 65th wedding anniversary'. TEN YEARS AGO The Wawa Skiers club is giving shows off the shore of the South Shore hotel on Saturday evenings. Origin of the fire which broke out Monday morning in the pit end of one of the six bowling lanes at the Pickwick Bowling Lanes is still undetermined. Fire chief James Connolly said it may have come from wiring underneath the alley. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Hall and son recently moved into their new home at Bayside Terrace. Mrs. Georgia Roomer of Mil-1 waukee, Wis., is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Burns Van Sickle and family. Jacob Ellsworth Davis, 72, died Monday in his home here. Survivors are two sons, two daughters and eight grandchildren. Plans for the 1936 Fall Festival sponsored by the Syracuse-Wawa-see Community Chamber of Commerce are being formed, according to chairman Roscoe Howard. The Camp Fire' Group girls of Warsaw are spending a week at Buttermilk Point on Lake Wawasee. Mrs. Hallie P. Prow, Bloomington, is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Frederick Clark. BETHEL WOMEN IN MEETING JULY 14 The Bethel Women's Fellowship met July 14 for its regular meeting. President Mrs. Donn Kesler had charge of the meeting. The family birthday night has been changed to August 21. It was decided to continue the meeting night on the second Thursday of each month. It was also decided to go to the Mexico home on a Wednesday, as soon as arrangements can be made. Several pairs of men’s shoes are to be bought for the organization's project for district meeting. Mrs. Fred Slabaugh had charge of devotions. She had as her subject “Shoes” and compared them in an interesting way to people’s lives. She also spoke about a missionary, Anna Mow, and her life as told in the Gospel Messenger. The 23d Psalm was used for prayer. It was portrayed by slides and poems. Mrs. Raymond Hoover And Mrs. Slabaugh served a fresH friut dessert with cookies, crackers and tea to the 13 women present. Cancer pads were made during the remainder of the evening. FRANK AVALOS UNINJURED AS CAR STRIKES FENCE Frank Avalos, 35, Milford, was uninjured at 9 p.m. Saturday when his auto left the Dewart Lake road six miles SE oi Milford and struck a fence on the Walter Nice farm. The driver told, deputy sheriff Roger Fellows the shock absorbers on the vehicle were faulty and the car went out of control. i Damages of $25 were listed to the (fence and $125 to the car.
