We Salute Indiana! The official publication of the American Legion, Hoosier Legionnaire, has an article on the front page of the April issue, entitled, “We Salute Indiana.” As the message concerns every. Hoosier, Legionnaire or not, we are reprinting it here. The article is signed McD, which undoubtedly stands for Arthur M. McDowell, editor of the Hoosier Legionnaire. During the coming months, our great state of Indiana will be observing her 150th birthday. From Lake Michigan to the Ohio River, from the boundaries of Ohio to Illinois, every community is teeming with plans for the giant celebration which is to accompany the Sesquicentennial anniversary- of our beloved Hoosier State. Many have tried to define Indiana. To the world, we are “Hoosiers.” And what is a Hoosier? He’s William Henry 7 Harrison. Ernie Pyle, George Ade, James Whitcomb Riley, Gene Stratton Porter, Cole Porter, the Wright Brothers, Wendell Willkie, Gus Grissom, Bill Herchel, Abe Martin, Hoagy Carmichael; he’s Roger Branigin, Ralph Gates and Henry Schricker; the steel worker of the Calumet; the fanner of Carroll county; the government worker in Indianapolis; the riverboat captain on the Ohio; he’s the thrifty, hard working laborer who believes in paying as he goes; he’s the Legionnaire who fought in three wars and now gives overwhelming support to his later-day companion-in-arms serving in Viet Nam; he’s the taxpayer who

'supports a great educational system, from kindergarten to the graduate schools of Indiana and Purdue; he’s the son of the Polish and the Irish, and the Italian and Hungarian immigrants who helped settle our land and work our mines and stoke out steel furnaces; he’s the TV announcer, the telephone repairman, the electrician and the gas man; he’s the country weekly editor and the great daily newspaper columnist; he’s the curbstone politician who reckons Indiana can run her business better than Washington; he’s the unabashed basketball fanatic who roots for Milan and Cloverdale and points with pride to Oscar Robertson and Johnny Wooden; he’s the priest and the rabbi and the preacher; he’s the teacher, the teamster, the huckster, the filling station attendant: the cook, the dishwasher, the window cleaner; he’s the waiter, the landscape artist, the architect, the stone cutter and the builder; he's the banker, the baker, the clerk, the village doctor and the skilled physician; he’s the small town lawyer and the big city attorney. He’s the composite of all these—these who believe with all their heart and soul I that “God is Good to Indiana.” In 150 years, this Hoosier that we salute has built a house on firm foundation; he takes no back seat to any man of industry; nor in loyalty to country or love of his God. He looks forward to the next 150 years with faith and fears not what the ’morrow brings. For whatever the challenge, he believes in his Bible and the story of David and Goliath; for he knows that it is true when a Milan whips the field to take a state basketball championship. He takes courage from his forefathers who settled this land and bequeathed it to him to pass on intact to the next and the next and the next generation. He knows that 150 years is both a short and a long time: it’s been long in days and weeks and months, but short in the eyes of the Lord. And as long as the Lord smiles on Indiana. a Hoosier will be around to bask in His Glory and to say: “Ain’t God Been Good to Indiana?”—McD.
