Bayh Says Americans Must Not Neglect Domestic Needs
FORT WAYNE — Senator Birch Bayh (IMnd.) said here last night that to “win the hearts and minds of men throughout the world” to the cause of freedom and away from communism, we must “first conquer ignorance and disease in our own land.” Bayh, principal speaker at the 100th anniversary dinner of the Fort Wayne B’nai B'rith, said that America, “as she has always been, inust remain the land where all people can hope and dream — and through education and hard work, make those hopes and dreams come true.” . The Indiana Senator said that about the time the Fort Wayne B’nai B’rith was founded, Abraham Lincoln challenged the nation to put aside “dogmas of the quiet past” that were “inadequate to the stormy present," and to “think anew and act anew." “So it is today,” Bayh said, “that the old dogmas don’t always apply. Today’s world requires new thought, new determination and renewed dedication to the basic principles which made our land a fortress of freedom, liberty and equality of opportunity.” Bayh said that today, “real freedom cannot be attained without educational opportunity for all. For with education, each individual will have the chance to become self- ■ supporting, independent and con-I tributing members of our society." , Earlier yesterday, Bayh spoke to an organizational meeting of Teen , Democrats in Indianapolis, and 'to | Allen county Democrats here. To-1 day, he will be in Gary to address a luncheon sponsored by the legislative and education committee of sub-district one of the United Steelworkers of America. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Kammerdiener of Syracuse and their guests. Mr. and Mrs. James Todd of Lake Wawasee. attended the Weatherhead Federal Credit Union dinner party Sunday. Jan. 16. in the M and M restaurant at North Webster. <• Mr. and Mrs. James Hann and sons, Syracuse, spent Sunday visiting at Albion.
