A year-round problem, keeping mice out of your home is especially difficult when cold weather drives mice toward warmer quarters. I Trapping is better than poisoning for controlling mice in a home, says Fred Courtsal, state supervisor, bureau of sport fisheries and wildlife, stationed at Purdue university, i Poisoned animals may die and decay in between partitions, presenting an odor problem. When you see evidence of mice in your home, put out several traps. Since mice like to run along a wall, place traps at right angels to the wall to catch mice running from either direction. Other good places to put traps are at each end of refrigerators and right angles to boxes stored in garages and attics. I You don’t have to bait the traps, but if you want to, you can use bits of bacon, cheese, raisins, peanut butter, nut meats, cake, soft canI dies, rolled oats or cotton. A stiff mixture of peanut butter and rolled oats appeals to mice.
