Our Health 2 f J. M. Ambetsoh, M.D. Tonsils When soldiers are wounded in battie, they are removed from the front lints since they are no longer able to fight the enemy. ’ Indeed, in their weakened cons B dition, they are > <-* a hazard to F’A their fellow 1 j soldiers if alJk lowed to stay at the front So it is with tonsils. As part of the lymphatic system, these two oval-shaped structures at the back of the mouth are considered a front line defense in the body’s war against infection. But, the tonsils themselves may become infected and may have to be removed. Unlike wounded soldiers who will recover, the tonsils never will see action again. ’V Tonsillectomies (called ‘T&As’ since the adenoids are usually removed at the same time) are most frequently performed on children: between the ages of 3 and 7. A ’T4A’ is usually a safe procedure, though the child will experience some discomfort afterwards. A recent study of 50 children who had undergone a *T&A’ revealed that a non-prescription oral solution called Chloraseptic was "highly effective, in relieving throat soreness... (and) healing progressed . . . rapidly without the usual discomfort.” Other studies have shown Chloraseptic to relieve promptly minor oralpharyngeal (mouth and throat) soreness from a wide variety of causes. There is a general belief among laymen that tonsils should always be removed whether or not infection is present Let me caution you to accept your physician’s verdict on the advisability of a *.T4A’ and don’t badger him to remove them if he does not believe it is the proper time. If your child must undergo a *T&A.’ remember he looks upon S>u as the Rock of Gibraltar. ever convey anxiety about the impending operation. J
