SALUTE TO REVEREND LINN The North Webster Church of God gave a final salute to Rev. Brooks Linn last Wednesday night at 7.30. Rev. Forrest Carlson, minister of the Church of God at Akron, gave the main talk. He reminisced about growing up with Rev. Linn. Rev. Phil Blake, minister of the Church of God at Big Lake, led the congregation in prayer. Tlie choir sang two of Rev. Linn’s favorite numbers and the girls’ trio sang, “Child <rf the King,” another one of Rev. Linn’s favorites. A reception was held in the fellowship hall following the service. Refreshments of coffee, cookies, and punch were served to approximately 150 members of the congregation. —NW— Backwater Friends Christmas Party The Backwater Friends Home Demonstration club held its annual Christmas party last Thursday night in the home of Mrs. Vernon Hollar with Mrs. Basil Miller as the cohostess. Mrs. Harold Leach gave health and safety tips on Christmas trees. To insure a safe Christmas make sure your tree has plenty of wxtter and your lights are plugged into a safe circuit. Mrs. Norman Rhodes gave the history of the song of the month and all sang “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day.” Officers Installed The following new officers were installed by Mrs. Richard Russell: President, Mrs. Ormel Kline; \ncepresident, Mrs. Orva Miller; secretary, Mrs. Harold Humble; treasurer, Mrs. Richard Ryerson. Mrs. Ormel Kline was in charge of the Christmas program and she read "Christmas is a Many Splendored Thing.” Mrs. Earl Black read “A Christmas Meditation,” Mrs. Ona Miller read “The Story of Christmas Bells” and played a number of Christmas selections on her bells.
Organ accompaniment to group singing of Christmas carols was proxided by Mrs. Robert Roose. A gift exchange revealed secret pals and secret pals were drawn for next year. The club prepared two Christmas baskets to be delixered locally. Refreshments of fruit cake with whipped cream, party crackers, cheese, coffee and tea were served by the hostess to the 22 members present. After welcoming Mrs. Arthur Iden to membership in the dub, the group spent the rest of the evening visiting. The next meeting will be at the home of Mrs. Robert Roose on January 20. —NWPythian Sisters Elects Officers Members of Lakeview Temple • Pythian Sisters met last Monday night at the Pv'thian hall for a carry-in dinner and Christmas party at 6:30. Families of the members were guests at the party which I featured a candlelight service and ' a visit from Santa who presented treats and gifts to about 20 children who were present. Following the dinner and party members held a short meeting at which time the following officers were elected for the coming year: Mrs. Thomas Doyle, M. E. The remainder of the evening was spent playing games. -NW—COMMUNITY NEWS i Frani Baugher, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Baugher, is spending the Christmas holidays with her parents. Miss Baugher is a freshman at Ball State and must return to school January 3. She came home Friday. J. L. Kline was admitted to the hospital in Goshen for observation and tests. He returned-to his home last Wednesday and is doing just fine. Mrs. Charles Koontz returned from Whitley County hospital at Columbia City to her home here last. Tuesday. She is reported feeling fine. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Treadw’ay of Syracuse- and Michael Blade of Dewart Lake left Saturday morning for EauGallie, Fla., for a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Cripe and family. Mr. and Mrs. James Connolly moved Saturday to the Syracuse Lake home they recently purchased from Ray Webster. Mrs. Ida Hibschman of Syracuse and her daughter, Mrs. Donald Lower, Mr. Lower and daughters of Toledo, Ohio, spent Saturday evening in Garrett with Mrs. Hibschamn’s son, Herman Jensen, Mrs. Jensen and children. The Lowers spent the night with Mrs. Hibschman. On Sunday they attended a pot luck dinner of the Clee Hibschman family in the home of Mr and Mrs. Louis Firestone and family. The Lowers returned to j Toledo Sunday evening. Priscilla and Christine LeCount of Warsaw spent the week end in the home of their aunt, Mrs. Emory Guy and Mr. Guy at Syracuse. Sunday School Christmas Program Held At Calvary Church A large crowd filled the sanctuary of Calvary church on Sunday evening, Dec. 19 for the annual Christmas Program presented by the children’s department of the Sunday church school . The program was under the direction of Mrs. Arlen Bobeck. the director of children’s wor t k. and Michael Neff, church school superintendent. They were assisted by all of the teachers. BARBARA ZIMMERMAN HONORED ON BIRTHDAY Barbara Zimmerman Was hostess at a slumber party last Friday evening in honor of her 13th birthday. Guests were Patty Myers, Becky Zimmerman. Cindy Rapp, Karen Chriswell and Sharon Sauer. The girls attended a movie and enjoyed refreshments of ice cream, cake and sandwiches during the evening. well as can be expected after her stay in the hospital at Goshen. Mrs. Ethel Grubb, Syracuse, was in Bloomington on Friday where she attended funeral senices for Paul Bixler. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Gilbert and children. ROUND TABLE LADIES HOLD YULE PARTY The Ladies of the Round Table of Syracuse held their annual Christmas party at Foo and Faye’s restuarant Monday evening with 23 members present. Dinner was served on one long table decorated with candles and miniature Christmas trees. Following the dinner the group went to the beautifully decorated home of Mrs. Philip Fawley for the Christmas program which consisted of readings and a gift exchange. Refreshments of punch and chokies were served by the committee. Mrs. Clayton Mock, Miss Ethel Bowser and Mrs. Hilary Bachman. To Pick Up Magazines For State Prison Anyone in the Lakeland area paying magazines and books for the prisoners of the State Prison at Michigan City are to take them to their respective churches Sunday. Kenneth Haney, chairman of the project, and his committee will gather the magazines and. books Monday at the churches.
