Cruz, was arrested Saturday afternoon for a hit and run accident in Nappanee. Dennis Smith. Nappanee, and a witness. Minna Borkholder, Nappanee. reported the accident. Mr. Smith stated the Milford man had backed into his car when it was parked in Nappanee and then drove away Mr. Smith stated the dam- , .ages to his car were in the amount of $330 Minna Borkholder saw the accident and took the license number of Cruz's car. The accident was then reported to the Nappanee police After the name* of the car's owner was obtained, she and Mr Smith went to Milford to file a | complaint against Cruz. , Shortly after 12:40 p. m. Saturday Cruz was arrested by Milford chief of police Ralph Gansert and I taken to the city hall He pled guilty to the charges in JP Harry ! Dale Doty's court and was fined $19.25 Mrs. Doty also assessed : Cruz for the damages to the Smith auto in the amount of $lO6 39. ! This bode has been given by the Milford Bridge club in memory of a former member. Carson D. Wise. National Children s Book Week will be observed Airing next week. WAUBEE GRANGE TO CONDUCT CONTESTS SATURDAY MORNING The Waubee Grange will sponsor contests Saturday morning from 10 to 12 noon during the Fall Festival at Milford. According to Earl Wolferman the contests will be a potato race for youngsters up-to 15 years old, a bicycl? race for'those between 10 and 15, a sack race for those between 10 and 15, and a pie eating contest for youngsters up to 15 years old, I According to Mr. Wolferman cash ; prizes will be given to the winners.

Zoning Board Os Appeals To Hear Petition The Syracuse zoning board of appeals will meet Thursday, Oct. 28, in the town hall at 7:30 p. m. The board will hear the appeal of Newell • Neuhauser on a petition for the construction of a garage 60 by 26 feet on property which he owns on state road 13, .south erf Syracuse. Mr Neuhauser stated tlvat at no tinx* did he apply for a permit to build a warehouse, .as stated in last week’s paper. Carl R. Reynolds, building commissioner confirmed this. Mr. Neuhauser said he needed a large garage to house a tractor, pontoon boat, inboard boat and trailer, which he now must store at this home at Fort Wayne and take them back and forth. He would like a garage built near the Lake in which to store them when not in use during the winter months.

' Waubee Grange Meets October 21 At the October 21 meeting of the Waubee Grange, Ray Bray presided over the regular business and roll call wats answered by 14 officers. Reports of interest had to do mainly with the State Grange session held | in Elkhart October 14, 15 and 16, reports being given by Mrs. Max Anglin. delegate, and Mrs. Herman Miller, ctKMrman of the home economic committee. This committee was responsible for the projects of the year and the entries at the state meeting. Members from the Waubee Grange who won awards were: Historical sampler, third place out. of the eight entries; report bf home economics projects, second place, s and the chairman received a pin from the state chairman. Mrs. Mary Cain; fancy aprons. Mrs. JMaansiiall Estep, third; and Mrs. Herman Miller, 4th; crocheted bedspread, Mrs. Goldie Losee (non-member. sponsored by Mrs. Waneta Sptcher'; crocheted doily, Mrs. Melvin Spicher. third; embroidered dresser scarf. | Mrs. Raymond Pinkerton, third. The Waubee Grange was awarded a certificate of merit for increase in membership and a banner from the State Grange. . , Mrs. Raymond Pinkerton received a purple star certificate from the State Grange lecturer for her programs during the year. Awards were given to the deputies in the state who had the granges in their counties entered in the community sen-ice program each; year. Raymond Pinkerton, deputy for Kosciusko and Marshall counties, received a certificate and a pin for having all four granges entered. Milford Tax Rate Cut .125 Cents The tax rate for the town of Milford was cut .125 cents by the state tax - commissioners Tuesdaymorning. Edith Baumgartner, clerk-treas- ; urer, reports the general fund was cut two cents — from SI.OB to $1.06. The street fund was cut 10 and a half cents from .205 to 10 cents. 1 TEENAGERS MAY ATTEND RECORD HOP Teenagers may attend the record hop scheduled for Saturday night between the hours of 8:30 and 11:30 p.m. at the Milford fall ! festival, according to chief of police Ralph Gansert. The record hop will extend past the curfew and therefore brought a question to the minds of several- I Teenagers will be given ample i time to go directly home from ibe record hop after its close. New Paris Man Cited Following Accident A New Paris man, James War- . ren Childers, was ticketed by both ] the Indiana state police arid the ' Milford police following a chase and j an accident north of Milford last j L The chase began at 10:45 p. m. in Milford when officer Don Drake noticed a car parked behind the Turf Bar. When officer Drake went to check on the car, Childers fled, going south down the rail road tracks. As officer Drake's car was headed : north at the time Childers got a head start as the policeman turned his car around. The chase continued out to state road 15 and north where speeds of over 85 miles per hour were reach- 1 ed. The car weaved and swefved from one side of the road to the other finally turning over and ending in a ditch just south of the overhead. at the road going west. Childers fled on — leaving the scene of the accident. j Officer Drake called the state* police, Civil Defense of Syracuse and React club of Goshen. They combed ; the area with no result. About midnight an unidentified man stopped at the accident scene with Childers. It was reported Childers had gotten the man out of bed and asked to be taken to NewParis. The man was suspicious of

Childers because of blood on his face and decided to take him to. the Milford police instead of to New- Paris. When he stopped at the accident scene Childers jumped from the car and, ran into the field. He was apprehended by state police who were still at the scene and taken to the Milford town hall. Childers was booked on two counts of reckless driving and for disobeying a police officer. Investigating were officer Drake arid chief of police. All Lions club members are asked to bake a cake to the Milford Electric shop before 5 p.m. on Saturday. Mrs. Williams Mrs. Dorothy Williams of the Milford high school English department will be a guest of the Lions on Monday, Nov. 1, at their regular meeting. She will tell of her experience as; a teacher in Africa.
