Death Claims Whitko School Board President
. Drath churned Homer E Schuman. 72, r 6 Columbia City, at 10:50 last evening < Tuesday Mr, Schuman was president of the Whitko Community School Corporation's board of trustees. Death came while Mr. Schuman was enroute to the Lutheran hospital at Fort Wa.vne He was pronounced dead upon arrival. The deceased had been elected to the Whitko board in 1964 and had been its president since that time. He was a 1912 graduate of Larwill . high school and received his BS degree in agriculture from Purdue university in 1917. He then went to i Washington. D C.-, where he was i crnployeed by the agriculture extension department imtil 1923 when his fathtn- became ill and he returned to manage the Schuman farm three m:le< west of Columl>ia. City. July 18. Mr. Nichols moved to South Bend from Warsaw 35 years ago and retired from the Studebaker Corporation ten yeans ago. He was preceded in death in 1954 by his wife, the former Ethel Dome. Survivors include two children, Mrs. Virginia Baum of South Bend end Dee Bertran. Jr., of Burlington. IL CL; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren: nephews, Donald and Robert Nichols, of Warsaw, and Leonard Nichols, of Syracuse. Services are incomplete. WAUBEE GRANGE IN JULY MEETING The Waubee Grange held its regular meeting July 8 at the hall with master Earl Wolferman presiding. I Twelve officers answered roll call I of the 28 present. A letter was read from the state master Jerome [ Davis, commenting the grange on its 10 new members and- a letter to Lloyd Felkner commending him , for the action he took in writing | to the national grange master for the tornado families to get help for them thru the grange and ASC farm program. Home ec chairman Mrs. Herman Miller gave a report on the grange's 1 projects and ask for the ladies to help on the sampler contest. The samplers are to be historical pictures, depicting grange history for the 100th anniversary of the grange in 1967. The lecture program and refreshments were given by the committee in charge for the evening. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Miller and Mr. and Mrs Melvin Spicher. The program consisted of readings and articles on the Fourth of July being Independence Day. Songs sung by the group included “Ameri- 1 ca." Syracuse Firemen Called To Grass Fire The Syracuse firemen were called to extinguish a grass fire Monday, at 1:50 p.m. at a field on the Warner road north of Syracuse. The Monday run was the fourth grass fire within a period of 10 days. | Fire chief William Hess cautioned. residents and vacationers to use i extreme care in burning trash and ■ t asked that cigarettes be put into car ash trays rather than flipped I out of car windows.
