Port Louisa and Michael Creek levees form the other legs of the triangle. . Neither was expected to hold against the surging water. The M&issippi began rising several weeks ago as the spring thaw started upstream? But the new levee didn’t begin, rising until Easter Sunday after a group of contractors rushed in some 40 heavy construction units.

Ten days later, the big machines had skimmed 300,000 cubic yards of clay from a hillside, and carted the heavy loads 1-1/2 miles down into the valley to build up the new levee This was accomplished in spite of several inches of rain that halted the job completely. While the equipment hustled to get the job completed, more than 200 lowa National Guardsmen and civilian Volunteers sandbagged the old levees. They held while the new .one was built.

(Special) - 'Senator Vance Hartke (D-Ind.) today [co-sponsored an amendment to the .Health Care Bill for the Aged. This i amendment would take care of all. illnesses regardless of duration, j As now written, the bill does not : cover prolonged illnesses i-equiring care beyond one year. “This will cure a fatal defect in an otherwise great measure.” Senator Hartke said. "The Senate Finance Committee has already approved a major change .which I introduced to increase the [number of days in the hospital from 160 to 120 . days, nursing home coverage from 20 to 100 days, and extension of home care from 100 to 175 •days. That covers 99 per cent of the [eases. However, what concerns me jis the one per cent not covered by the bill who really need the coverage more than anyone else.” i The amendment which I am in- | traducing today/’ Senator Hartke continued, “will take care of that I gap with comparatively little ini crease in the cost of the health care program. The significant improvement it makes surely warrants inclusion.” DR. BAKER ELECTED j COLLEGE PRESIDENT I By official action of the Board of Trustees of Huntington college. Dr. E DeWitt Baker has been elected to the presidency of Huntington college to replace retiring president Elmer Becker.
Weekly Fishing Report
July — Rising water temperatures and large amounts of surface runoff have created fluctuating fishing conditions for Indiana anglers this week. Despite the varied conditions encountered throughout the state, fishermen are adjusting to the circumstances and many good catches are reported. Steuben, LaGrange, Kosciusko, and Noble counties report good fishing. This is characteristic of the fishing in the northern section of the state this week. Bass fishing is reported good at Dallas, Whitmer, Westler, and Attwood lakes in LaGrange county. Similar reports have been received from Pike. Tippecanoe, and Silver lakes in Kosciusko county. Silver lake in Steuben county reports very good bass fishing. Excellent bluegill catches are reported at Lake Ann in Steuben county, with good results reported at Marsh lake. Good catches of pike are being taken from Tippecanoe river and Pike lake in i Kosciusko countv. i J n ” i R j
