Behind The Statistics

A lot of facts and figures cross my desk each day, but none are more pleasing than those which say: prosperity is going up and unemployment is going down. That is why I have reason to be •’doubly glad" this week. Sorting thi’ough a p.le of statistics, I find that family income in the tinted States is up a wliopping 57 persent over ten years ago: Xot only that, tint employment figures for Indiana show "that there are more Hoosiers now working at more jobs than ever before in history. I remember a visit to the Calumet area a few years ago when times were not so good. The figures that had crossed my desk at that time were gloomy, but figures did not tell even half the story I met with men who could not find jobs. Many had not had work for months, and familv savings’ accounts were fast running out'Job prospects for the weeks ahead were dreary. The faces of these men told the story much

better than figures ever could. So when I come across statistics, I try to see the human element behind them. And this is why the figures I have in front of me now are so pleasing. For instance a table shears Indiana rose 18,600 iri° just one month this spring. The figure alone is impressive, but to me this means ttnt 18.600 more Hoosier families are taking an active role in our buying and vacationing. They have surging economy. They are working, jobs and their families no longer have to struggle to get by on umemployment insurance — or even less. And speaking of families, the fact that they are making 57 percent more now than they did 10 years ago helps to explain why the American economy is so healthy. Just in the apst year family income in Indiana has" increased by 5 per cent. Our state’s total personal income divided bv our total population in-

dicates that every Hoosier, man, woman, and child — has an average income of about $2,500. Hus is at about the national average, and it looks especially good when you consider that in some states the per capita was more than SI,OOO under the average! Figures of course never tell the whole story and this is true here. While employment looks good, the are still three per cent of Indiana’s workers without a job. There are the lowest fiugres in years, but the people within the 3 percent category are not much interested in statistics. The nation continues on the long* est period of continous cusiness expansion in history— but we must never neglect our efforts to provide honest work for all who want it. IT PAYS TO ADVERTISE
