Death Claims Benjamin Reed, New Paris, As Car Slips From Jack
BENJAMIN HARRISON REED Benjamin Harrison Reed. 2s. New Paris, died of suffocation when a car which he was working under slipped from a jack at the Jerry Marquart residence. New Paris, arpund 5 30 pm: Friday,. Feb. 12, Reed was pronounced dead on arrival at Goshen hospital by Elkhart county coroner Dr. George S. Westfall. who ruled death was due to suffocation. . ' ’ A native of Carthage, Va . Reed was born July 31. 1942. the son of Rev and Mrs Paul Reed ried Sharon Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bob 1 Smith of Syracuse. .Vnr.l 26. 1964 Airs Reed is an expectant mother. Warren Swartz. Reed went to the Marquart house about 5 p.m. to examine a transmission of a 1955 Chevrolet parked at the rear of the property with other junk cars, Mrs. Marquart gave Reed’ permission to get the auto parts he wanted and gave him tier -husband’s telephone ntimber to call if he wanted to buy the naris . * Mrs. Marquart told Sgt. Swartz that she ukr.red out .a window at about 5:20 p.m and saw Reed under the car, noticed, the car appeared to" be “setting close to tiie ground". She did not think, anything was wrong, however. Te: ry M- Ber.-def,” who saw Reed behind the Marquart residence and waved to him around 5 p.m, finished making a delivery and returned to the store where rie works. About an hour later Bender was walking home from work when he noticed Reed’s car running behind the house, but did not see R ■ He went to the rear of the Marquart residence to look for Reed, but did not immediately see him, . -v trading from, under the car which had fallen on. him. Friends were received after 7 p. m. Wednesday at the Wright-Yoder funeral home in Nappanee. The body will lie in state at the -UiSon Center Church of the Brethren from noon Friday until 2:30 p. m. Friday, the hour of the funeral service. Rev. Ross Nofsinger will officiate and burial will be in Union Center cemetery. Mrs.. Robert Moser was the cohostess. Mrs. Franklin Ringler, president called the meeting to order and presided for the business session. Mrs. Jack Maresh won the high prize and travel.
