BiUToKeepßiDboardsOff Interstate Highway Sought The Chicago Motor Club, in the current issue <rf its official pubiication, Motor News, anonunced that legislation will be sought by the motor dub and other AAA-affiliat-ed motor dubs in Indiana during the 19® session of the Indiana General Assembly which would prevent uncontrolled erection of billboards along Interstate System highways in the state. Gerald W. Cavanagh, president of the Chicago Motor dub, said that adoption of a law which meets Federal standards would qualify Indiana lor the special bonus of onehalf of one per cent of project costs on the Interstate System. In addition, he said, such legislation would preserve the appearance and add greatly to the safety of Indiana Interstate highways. Cavanagh pointed out that unless Congress grants an extension, the deadline for this bonus is July 1, 19®. Therefore, for Indiana to qualify for this additional highway construction money, the state must adopt this billboard taw at its upcoming session, he said. ‘Twenty-two states already have adopted this type of taw, and Indiana should join those providing reasonable controls over outdoor
advertising along Interstate routes”, Cavanagh said. ‘‘ln Indiana, R is estimated that passage of such a law would add approximately ®.5 million to Hk Highway FUnd.” Cavanagh explained that the proposed legislation would not prohibit outdoor advertising along Interstate roads, but would provide a certain amount of control to make sure the signs do not interfere with quick comprebensicn of directional and waramg signs by drivers. “Indiana should join the honor rail of states which already have token steps to prevent our great Interstate System from becoming billboard alleys,” Cavanagi said. “Since these roads are paid for entirely from motorists' taxes, drivers haive every reason to expect that their desire for orderliness and sightliness along these freeways be given fofi consideration.” | £9ll**** *WTTV

For Christmas S I A PHARMACIST'S CHRISTMAS CAROL | By Elmon L. Catatine Twas the night before Christinas in Joe Smith's drug store And Joe had just turned the key in the door, The Christmas goods arrayed so nicely that mom Now lay on the counters all tattered and torn. MM Joe sighed, and then wearily shaking his head M Rearranged the display and then went home to bed. He was just dozing off when the doorbell’s loud clang : ■ Aroused him. He uttered a very mild “Hang,” But, donning his slippers and robe went below. lw« At the door was a lad, ragged, covered with snow. ■ “What’s the matter?" asked Joe when he saw the young lad. “It’s my ma,” the boy whispered, “she’s sick — real bad. "I’ve got a perscripshun. Doc sent me to you. “Said he thought with this medicine he’d bring her thru.” Joe nodded his head and replied, “Come on in.” Through his tears the boy mustered a wisp of a grin. Joe dressed and together they trudged down the street The snow creaked and cracked under their feet. u / Then into the store and back to the case. R And Joe shook his head — the sleep to erase. He got theTngredients, checked them all twice km And then as he started to figure the price fi He glanced at the lad with his clothes all a-tatter. And he said to himself, “Oh! What does it matter.” ■H “Come on,” (to the lad). ”I’ll go home with you. “I might as well see the thing all the way thru.” Then, taking the lad’s hand and saying, “Let’s go.” IHg He led him again thru the blustering snow. ■ m 3 As Joe arrived home, the moon shining bright, I Gave luster of midday to objects that night But Joe didn’t notice the moon or the snow. His thoughts were back there where a lamp’s feeble glow, Had illumined a husband who bent O’er his wife And whispered, "God bless you, Joe Smith for her life.” v aii M 3 i Burkholder drug I DOWNTOWN SYRACUSE
