Syracuse Board Awards Building Contract To Borkholder Firm

The Syracuse town board of trustees met for their regular meeting Tuesday night, Dec. 1. Byron Connolly, president, .reported that a fifth board member would be appointed January 1. Clerk - treasurer Walter Calnon handed in the two bids for the pole building that had been submitted to the board members. One bid, from the Smiley Lumber Company of Denver, was for $4,052. The other bid was from Borkholder Building Company of Nappanee and was for $3,990. The board members approved the Borkholder bid and awarded the contract to them. Bids had been opened at the November 17 meeting. however, due to the absence of two members of the board, no decision could be made. Both companies had agreed to a five per cent reduction of their bills if construction could start after the firs? of January. Board members will look over the proposed site for the building soon This building will eliminate the use of the old depot, which the, citizens in the neighborhood haw complained about for some time. The theatre manager will be notified to place “no parki ing" hoods over the meters duri ing theatre hours. 1 Chief of police Dan Ganger stated the police would watch to see ■ that no car is parked in the two spaces during the hours when the theatre is open. Fire chief William Hess said that the area needs to be kept dear, not only for the fire equipment, in case of fire, but so the patrons of the theatre are able to get out. Mr. Hess reported to the board that one of the trucks needed replacements of a fuel pump and muffler. It will cost >SO and was approved by the board.
