Applications For Medical Assn. For Aged Now Being Taken

Applications for medical assistance for the aged (Kerr-Mills Medical Care are accepted by county welfare departments throughout the state since December 1, 1964. it was announced today by Albert Kelly, state welfare administrator. The new category' of medical care' was created by the last session of the Indiana General Assembly. The program offers comprehensive medical care for those who can meet the eligibility requirements fixed by law Among the eligibihiy requirements, a person must be 65 years of age or older, a resident of the state of Indiana, a citizen of the United States, and must have paid or obligated himself for SSO of medical expense during the 12 months prior to the .application. Any income in excess of $1,200 00 per year for a single person or $1,800.00 for a married couple, in addition to the premiums paid for health insurance, must be applied to the applicant s own medical expense. Indiana presently provides medical care for 25.000 recipients of medical only and old age assistance.' Mr. Kelly stated that the state department estimates 3.000 senior citi- , zens may qualify for this new medical assistance program. Mr. Kelly said, and in addition a series of meetings are being conducted by state welfare staff throughout the state to acquaint county welfare department employees with the operational aspects of the new program. Individuals desiring information regarding the program should make inquiry at their local county welfare department. Kelly noted that while applications are being taken, payments cannot be made for medical care furnished prior to January’ 1. 1965, which is the effective date of the program. The car was at King’s Service Center until Tuesday of this week. A Mail-Journal staff photo. George Graff, 35. r 1 Pierceton, sustained a serious spinal injury and other injuries at 4:45 a. m. last Thursday morning (Thanksgiving) ' when he lost control of his car, a I 1965 Ford sedan, a mile and a half > north of Pierceton on road 13. j His car knocked over a mail box i in front of the Ernest Albers home and came to rest near the Raymond Faulkner home. Graff was thrown from the vehicle. He is. the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wai- ( ter Graff of Syracuse, formerly of Milford. Faulkner heard the crash and immediately called for the Spangle funeral home ambulance. Graff was taken to the Murphy Medical Center in Warsaw, then to Indiana University Medical Center at Indianapolis where his injuries were reduced. Investigating officers were deputy sheriff Roger Fellows and Pierceton marshal Peter Yorg. It was thought Graff was driving at an excessive rate of speed. Mr. Graff is suffering from a severe spinal injury and is confined to an Indianaoplis hospital. Mrs. Graff accompanied her husband to Indianapolis.
