Peace Corps Drive Nets Blue Collar Workers More than 250 skilled workers have ’ applied for Peace Corps service as a 1 result of experimetnal recruiting vis- ' its to some of the nation’s leading in- ’ dustrial plants, director Sargent . Shriver announced today. The applications followed visits of special Peace Corps recruiters to International Harvester, J. I. Case, < Mack Truck, John Deere, and Cater- - pillar Troctor Co. The recruiters are I now telling the Peace Corps story at 1 the Chrysler and Ford Motor Co. 1 plants in Detroit, Mich. I As a result of the excellent re- i sponse to this experimental recruit- 1 ing, a special new department has i been set up at Peace Corps headquarters to spearhead the blue col- < ’ lar drive. Shriver said. Also, new ; tests and application forms have < been devised especially for skilled . workers, and intensive recruiting • visits are being planned to other industrial areas throughout the country. “This could turn out to be the working man’s Rhodes’ Scholarship’’, Shriver said. “We hope to have 3,000 skilled workers taking advantage of this program by Christmas of 1965”. In past months, the Peace Corps has relied heavily on college graduates to sene as volunteers. But the need for workers with manual skills is mounting steadily, and the Peace Corps has been unable to fill these requests. It is hoped that the blue collar drive will help to meet this need. The AFIrCIO and 20 leading U. S. industrial concerns are cooperating in the program. They are promoting leaves of absence and working out policies to guarantee that employees who join the Peace Corps can have their jobs back when they return from overseas, with no loss of seniority or pension rights. Mr. Weatherhead To Receive Degree Albert J. Weatherhead, Jr., Cleveland, 0. president of the Weatherhead Company, which has a plant in Syracuse, will receive an honory degree, doctor of laws, at the mid- ■ of Tri-State college, Angola, on Sat-' urday, Dec. 12, announces Dr. Richard M. Bateman, president of the college. Roy Abernethy of Detroit, president and chief executive officer of American Motors Corporation, will give the address.
