Last year when strikes closed newspapers in New York and Cleveland the business community was aware that retail sales had been seriously affected. Sales figures have been released ,which indicate specifically how serious the losses to retail stores were. In Cleveland, according to Federal Reserve figures, departure t store sales ran 21 per cent below the previous year. In New York the weekly losses to department stores because of the newspaper strike was 11 per cent.
