Good Weather Gets Golf Season Started
“ The Lakeland golf season can be termed officially open with the first flush of balmy weather over the week end. Fine Saturday weather brought out a number of golfers on the three main courses in the Lakeland area— South Shore, Wawasee, and Maxwdton. Friends appeared hale and hearty, giving the old woods the practice swings to loosen up tight shoulder muscles after a winter of indoors, cards, and television. All pros expect a great season coming up. New Face Most faces in management positions are old ones, but one new face appears. This is Robert Auer, the new pro at South Shore, taking the position created by the dismissal of Ron DeMao last fall. Auer began his new duties last Friday. He previously held an assistant pro position at Tippecanoe Lake Country Club and served as assistant at Maxwelton course near Syracuse Lake. Bob is 33 years old, married, and the father of four children. Roxana 7, Jeff, 5, Robin. 4. and Jay, seven j months. Dick Scott of Milford will j assist Auer. • r Returning faces are owners Don 1 Byrd at Wawasee Golf course, and i: Tom Merritt at Maxwetlon. both be- , ing mainstays in the area and well j i known in golfing circles. Merritt beigns his 17th year as proowner of Maxwelton, and reports hiscourse in fine condition. Golfers may | never be the same after visiting severa! of his 12 new sand traps strateg* j ically placed around many of the greens A hundred tons of sand have been place#! in the 12 new traps. Merritt’s son. Tom. Jr., a Florida law student, and his wife will return to the area and Tom will assistj his dad in the chores of running the club. Norm Robin, well known in golfing circles, will continue as greenskeeper. He has supervised in removing several dead trees and planting some new ones thus spring. Don Byrd is beginning his 11th year as pro-owner of the Wawasee Golf club. He reports his course is in excellent condition. All greens have been rolled and trimmed and are playing in mid-season form. He will be assisted by Bob Ellis. a Syracuse high school senior and something of a '‘mean*’ golfer himself. Byrd reports number 3, known as the par-five wet hole, has responded to continue drainage efforts, and should be in good shape. All three clubs have planned social events to make this a fine year of golfing.
