Members of the Lakeland Community , School Corporation's board of trustees took action on two items of the Purdue university survey which they besan to evaluate a special me ting h< ld last evening. Board members decided it would be practical for the corporation to eventually own all units of transportation, At the present time tty?re are 23 buses jointly owne> 1 by the drivers and the corporation. A schedule accepted by the board should reduce this number to 10 by 1967. Hensley. son of Mr, and Mrs. Virgil Hensley of Cromwell, recently completed extensive training in preparation for transfer to the Far East. He is enroute to Okinawa and [duty with the Third Marine Division. The division will be in the Far east for 13 months. They departed San Diego on January 8. While in Okinawa, the Marines will be part of the American] force-in-readiness in the Far East. The Third Marine Division provides the South East Treaty Organization (SEATO i with a ready pool of combat-ready infantrymen and supporting forces. Okinawa is 65 miles long and ranges from 2 to 17 miles in width. It is 960 miles from Tokyo, Japan, and 900 miles from Hong Kong.
ST-MAR-KOS POMONA GRANGE HAS JAN. 2 PARTY Forty members of the St-Mar-Kos Pomona Grange -were present Thursday evening, January 2, at a post-Christmas party at the Bremen Grange Hall. The December 19 meeting was postponed due to bad weather. A potluck supper was served with the home economics committee providing the turkey, ham, dressing, coffee, and rolls. All officers, except one executive committee member, were in I their respective places for the business session. Three of the new officers were installed by Ben Thompson, namely Glen Pinkerton, as steward; Lois Schafer as j ■lecturer: and Irene Ronk as Ceres. f c The following subordinate granges gave reports of their activities: Bremen, Waubee (Milford), Menominee. Harmony and New Tamarack. Reports vt’ere heard from the audit committee, approved and accepted; from the home economic, , agriculture and legislative chairmen. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd J. Felkner of Milford presented the Pomona Grange, the Grange implements. Mrs. Lois Schafer, lecturer, presented the following program: “Silent Night” and “O. Come AH Ye Faithful” by the entire group. 4 reading "The Night After Christmas” was given by Mrs. | Raymond Pinkerton, and Patty | Schafer gave the poem “Christ- ■ mas”. A gift exchange was enjoyed as well as a silent auction, the latter being conducted by the home ! economics committee. Those from Waubee Grange attending were Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd J. Mrs. Loren Longenbaugh, introduced Orrin Hall and Richard Sheets of Nappanee, who presented the program “Put Your Best Foot Forward." Mr. Hall and Mr. Sheets gave an interesting talk and showed slides on shoes and feet. They also showed many new spring styles of ladies’ shoes. BETHEL YOUTH STUDY DATING The first of a series of lessons on dating titled, ° ‘Conduct On A Date,” was studied by the Bethel Youth group at their meeting last Thursday evening in the social rooms of the church in Milford. The lesson started with a sound film strip and was followed by an interesting discussion about ideas for dating, dress and manners. Devotiohs for the evening were in charge of Herb Reuter, who also led the group in prayer. The business meeting was conducted by the president, Larry Hoover. Linda Kesler, secretary, erad the minutes of the December 5 meeting and reviewed the caroling party and New Year’s watch which were held since that time. The group voted to arrange a Sunday’service for March 8 at the church. Carol Chambers, who had a birthday Thursday, was startled with a big “Happy Birthday Surprise.” The next meeting will be Thursday, Feb. 6. Victor D. Hale, USN, Returns From Cruise
Victor D. Hale, machinery repairman second class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ceyland L. Hale of Ligonier returned to Newport, R. 1., aboard the destroyer USS Blandy, December 20 after three months deployment in the Mediterranean and Middle East. Blandy participated in operations with units of the British and Pakistani Navies, and aircraft from Iran and Turkey in a CENTO exercise called MIDLINK VI. This exercise was designed to increase military cooperation and efficiency among allied nations. J. L. SCHROEDER LOSES DRIVERS LICENSE John Lewis Schroeder of 917 E. ISLAND CHAPEL LADIES AID ELECTS OFFICERS JAN 9 An all day comforter knotting meeting was held in the Island Chapel church annex Thursday, Jan. 9, with a potluck dinner at noon. Three comforters were knotted. Rev. Wilson was present to enjoy the dinner and conduct the annual election of officers. Mrs. Harvey Hollar, the president, -presided, opening the meeting with. “The Beautiful Garden of Prayer.” Mrs. Paul Kegebein read the secretary report and roll call. Election of officers were: President, Mrs. Kendall Biller; vice president, Mrs. Harvey Hollar; secretary, Mrs. Roy Tusing; treasurer, Mrs. Paul Hollar. Mrs. Kenneth Heckaman was enrolled as a new member. Mrs., Donald Fox will be the February hostess. NEWCOMERS CLUB HOLDS WHITE : ELEPHANT SALE ' The Syracuse Newcomers club met Wednesday evening, Jan. 15, in the home of Mrs. Carl Hepler with 22 members present, including one new member, Mrs. Roger Holsclaw. Guests were Mrs. Richard Atkinson, Mrs. Dora Englehart and Miss Sharon Hoke. The co-hostesses were Mrs. Jan Rinker and Mrs. Max Wagner.
