Claypool Wins Its First County Basketball Tourney

lhe 47th annual Kosciusko county basketball tournament championship was won for the first time by a Claypool team. The Claypool Knights, defeating Mentone 90 to 76 in the semi-finals, won the championship by defeating the Pierceton Cubs in a hard fought game, 69 to 65, in the final game' at the Warsaw gym Saturday’night. Pierceton had defeated Milford in the afternoon semi-fin-als, 91 to 74. Here’s How It Went Claypool jumped into an early lead but the Cubs hitting from out narrowed the gap, and Wells scored at the end of the first quarter to tie the score 15-all In the second quarter, the Cubs haH’ing trouble working .the ball and Claypool holding them out, fed the ball to Dick Wells who hit 7 for 7. making 11 field goals in the first: half to account for 22 of his team’s 36 points in the first half. With Pierceton holding a 3point edge at the start of the third, Claypool hit two fielders to take the lead, but the Cubs hitting well from the field at the end of the quarter held a 6-point lead. At the start of the final period, Pierceton went cold and with Rex Reid scoring a lone fielder, Claypool knitted the score 54 to 54. Cary Rmggenberg put the head for the last time and Conley made a free throw and a fielder to give Claypool a lead, with 4.40 to go in the game. The Cubs by now in serious foul, trouble, matched the Knights from the field but lost Carlin and Slusher on 5 fouls and in the final minutes Dick Wells was charged with a deliberate foul when he pushed McKenzie out of bounds on McKenzie's drive under. This was Wells’ sth foul also. Charlie McKenzie. brother of the fouled Larry Mc Kenzie, was charged with a technical foul by pushing Wells after the foul on his brother. The game ended with the Knights taking the game and championship, 69 to 65. Pierceton scored 30 field goals to Claypool's 25 but the Cub’s 21 fouls gave the Knights 19 points on free throws to Pierceton’s 5. The first half hot shooting by Dick Wells carried him to high scoring honors for the game with 26 points with 22 of the points be- . ing made in the first half. PIERCETON, 91 MILFORD 74 (Semi-Finals) In the first game of the semifinals Saturday afternoon the Pierceton Cubs won their way to the finals by setting down an outstanding Milford team 91-74. The first quarter was close all the way with Pierceton holding a 2-point lead. In the second quarter Milford went out in front, but the Cubs, ball-hawking and driving hard, came on strong to get the lead at the half. 43 to 36.

The Knights are eagerly clutching the newly won silver horseshoe, and in front of the trophywinning cheerleaders are their Me Kown award and the tourney trophy.

The Cubs put on the pressure; and in the fourth broke the game j wide open and went on to win with a 17-point margin. Milford’S Tom Holderread, playing a great all-around game, had ■ 13 field goals to lead all scorers with 26 points. Dick Groves, with 11. was the only other Trojan in double figures. Dick Wells led the Cubs in scoring w-ith 23 points, Ray Slusher had 21, Garth Cone had 16. and Wayne Carlin and Cary Ringgenberg each hdd 11. The Trojans were in front at all stops, however, the first four minutes of the contest were nip and tuck. At that time Milford broke aw’ay from a 7-7 tie and soon owned a 17-7 lea<L,The ’Jackets were far from out of the game and had caught their rivals before the half-time gun had sounded. Again, Milford broke away and led 46-27 at half-time. Syracuse came no closer than nine points during the remainder of the game. Milford had six players in double figures. Tom Holderrcad was the team’s leading scorers with 13 points, Verl Baker and Dick Groves each had 14. Jon Dewart had 12, Mike Zimmerman had 11, and Greg Mishler had 10. , Syracuse's Paul Brewer led all scorers with 23 points. He was follow’ed by Jack Zimmerman, 17, and John Longenbaugh, 16.
