25 YEARS AGO, DEC. 15, 1938 The business section of Milford was nicely decorated for the holiday season. The streamers and wreathes which were placed across the street were made by Henry Beer, local florist. The decoration was promoted by the Milford Commercial club. Noble Miller, an attendant at the Irwin Oil Co. service station, has leased this station from the Pure Oil Co. The station is located at Catherine street and road 15. Ivan B. Kline has received his appointment as justice of the peace, approved by the county commissioners last week. Mr. Kline will take office on Jan. 1. The Christmas vacation of the Milford school will start Dec. 24 and end Jan. 1. Elmer Doty was hurt late Tuesday afternoon in a fall from a wagon while unloading wood at his residence. He was removed to the McDonald hospital for X-ray examination and treatment for two scalp wounds. Frank Clover left Wednesday for Gary, where he will be employed in a large department store for the next two months. William Gregg of Galien, 0., is visiting his sisters, Mrs. Mattie Tom and Mrs. Norman Groves, and husband. Before moving to Elkhart, Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Chatten donated their piano to the Methodist church. Mr. and Mrs. Chatten purchased a new piano for their Elk- / hart home. 35 YEARS AGO, DEC. 13, 1928 * Miss Lina Schori and Mrs. John Custer, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Baumgartner, planned a surprise on their parents, who had been married 44 years ago, Sunday evening. A daughter weighing 7 % pounds was born at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Dobson on Monday night, Dec. 10. The baby girl has been named Priscilla Joan. Mr. and Mrs. George Wyland are now occupying the Tully residence. Indiana automobile license plates will be placed on sale Saturday, Dec. 15. The state depart-1 ment will operate 115 branch license plate departments over Indiana. Joe Krauter and Charles Bird were the first to open the ice fishing season here and have been catching some nice ones. this week in Detroit as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Porter Charpie Mrs. Harve Syler of Nappanee, accompanied by Mrs. John Robinson, spent Saturday in South Bend. The first social event of the Christmas season was held Wednesday evening, Dec. 5, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Felkner when members of the home economics club entertained their families at a dinner party. 40 YEARS AGO, DEC. 13, 1923 A small fire broke out Friday evening about-five o’clock at the barber shop owned by Harry Martin. Charles Speicher, a forward on the MHS basketball team, was out of the game at Nappanee Friday evening with an injured knee. Milford won with a score of 26 to 20. John and Peter Hoerr of Peoria, 111., spent several days the past week with their brother, David Hoerr, and also with the Matthew Weisser family. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Doty and Mrs. Blanche Parks and daughter Helen spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. James Berkeypile at Bourbon. John Paugh, wife, son John, and daughter Lena, of Oswego, were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Helminger. 50 YEARS AGO, DEC. 11, 1913 Miss Mae B. Hoover, daughter of John Hoover, living SE of Milford, was married on Thursday of last week to Floyd M. Galloway, a farmer near Cromwell. Abraham Lincoln freed the Negro, made a great speech at Gettysburg, but he never dodged an automobile, never pushed a button for a light,‘never said “hello central”, and never posed for moving pictures and yet he died only 48 years ago. Miss Rosa Krauter, a Milford girl, was married to Roy Symensma, a New Paris young man, on Thursday last. Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Werhly went to Goshen Wednesday to attend the poultry show. The mail carriers out of Milford got into a fine mess Monday morning. The snow drifts on some parts of r 2 were horse high, and the horse was no “Indian pony” either.
