Os cautious feet, Rhythmn of the drummer’s beat Said, in solemn message sweet, “Step lightly, Lightly tread, You’re in the presence of the dead.” All through the night, In solemn mein, train, and airplane, They came and went; they came and went. AH through the night, with honor crowned • With solemn mein he lay alone, Forever, in silent rest From work well done. Alone with God; With God alone. Although he fell from evil shot, He is not dead: nor ill forgot. His greatest aim was peace and good, Both for ours and other lands. The outcome of it all is in God’s hands.
Memory of him lingers still: And always will. And always willAll through the night. All through the day, They came to pass, and look, and go away. They did not see as with natural eye, The form they grasp is mental view, “We came to pay, in simple course, Our sincere respects, to YOU, of course.” Joseph C. t A PHARMACIST'S CHRiSTMAS CAROL « • by Elmon L. Catatine ‘Twas the night before Christmas in Joe Smith’s drug store And Joe had just turned the key in the door, The Christmas goods arrayed so nicely that morn (J Now lay on the counters all tattered and torn. Joe sighed, and then wearily shaking his head - Rearranged the display and then went home to bed. I. y/ He was just dozing off when the doorbell’s loud clang Kji Aroused him. He uttered a very mild “Hang,” . But, donning his slippers and robe went below. ® At the door was a lad, ragged, covered with snow. “What’s the matter?” asked Joe when he saw the young lad. M “It’s my ma,” the boy whispered, “she’s sick — real bad. Vi “I’ve got a perscripshun. Doc sent me to you. “Said he thought with this medicine he’d bring her thru. M’ Joe nodded his head and replied, “Come on in. Through his tears the boy mustered a wisp of a grin, y/ Joe dressed and together they trudged down the street Vi The snow creaked and cracked under their feet. Then into the store and back to the case. And Joe shook his head — the sleep to erase. 4 • He got the ingredients, checked them all twice M. And then as he started to figure the price jj He glanced at the. lad with his clothes all a-tatter. M And he said to himself, “Oh! What does it matter. “Come on,” (to the lad). “I’ll go home with you. “I might as well see the thing all the way thru. M Then, taking the lad’s hand and saying, ‘ Let s go. kx He led him again thru the blustering snow. As Joe arrived home, the nioon shining bright, j? Gave luster of midday to objects that night Vi But Joe didn’t notice the moon or the snow. His thoughts were back there where a lamps feeble glow, Had illumined a husband who bent O er his wife And whispered, “God bless you, Joe Smith for her life.” ! Burkholder r £g B DOWNTOWN SYRACUSE
