State Tax Board Cuts Lakeland School Budget

SYRACUSE WOMAN HURT IN FALL AT HER HOME The Syracuse fire department’s emergency unit answered a call Tuesday morning, Oct. 15, to Mullen’s drive, Syracuse. I Mrs. Lois Mullens had injured her hip when she fell at her back door. She was taken to the office of a local physican and later removed to Elkhart General hospital, where a pin was placed in the hip. Mrs. Mullens, in her late 70’s, will have to remain in the hospital for some time.

An all-day program is being planned by the Hastings church. Rev. Raymond Wilson will be the morning speaker. A basket dinner will be served at noon. The Menno Singers will present the special music for the afternoon service which will start at 1:45 p. m.

Syracuse Auxiliary In Oct. Meeting Wawasee Unit 223 of the American Legion Auxiliary, Syracuse, met Tuesday evening at the Legion hall with president, Mrs. Charles Dean presiding. Seventeen members and three guests, Mesdames Richard Trammel, Perry Mast and Wallace Buffer, attended. Meeting was opened in regular form. Mrs. Ray Sarjent, chaplain, offered prayer. Mrs. Harry Coy secretary, read minutes of the last meeting and also of a recent executive .meeting followed by a treasurer’s report by Mrs. Charles Kroh. Mrs. Tim Darr, membership chairman, announced 69 paid members to date and also announced as community service chairman that one walker and one bed were in use by people in the community. Chili Supper Mrs. O. P. Davis, finance chairman, announced a chili supper planned for Saturday, Nov. 2, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the hall. Mrs. Darr, Mrs. Sarjent and Mrs. Dean will be in charge of the supper. Mrs. Davjs, poppy chairman, also announced poppies have been ordered. Mrs. Blanche Kline, Knightstown Home chairman, re- I ported a 12-year-old boy at the home would serve as the unit’s boy for another year. Mrs. Dean said a flag burning, was scheduled for November 10 at 6 p.m. in the uptown parking lot and anyone having old flags may bring them in for the event. This will be followed by a carry-in dinner at the hall for legion members, auxiliary 1 members and veterans, regardless of whether the veterans are members of the Syracuse post.' SYRACUSE FIRE DEPARTMENT ANSWERS CALLS The Syracuse fire department answered two calls Thursday, Oct. 10, both were from the Aero Manufacturing Corp., where brush was burning in the locality. On Saturday, Oct. 19, the fire department reported it had extinguished a vehicle on state road 13, south of Syracuse. On Sunday morning, Oct. 20, the fire department answered a call to Liberty Coach, where the automatic alarm system had gone off, there was no.fire. The f®e department answered a call north on Huntington street Monday night where a mobile home on the highway was on fire, little damage was reported. Tuesday morning, Oct. 22, the fire department made a run to McCormick-Cutter, where a hot piece of metal caused the hose on. | a welding outfit to burn. Before the. fire was extinguished the welding outfit was destroyed, causing $250 damage. Carolyn Sue Jensen And Franz Duy Wed In New Albany Church August 3

Impressive formality keynoted the late summer wedding of Miss Carolyn Sue Jensen and Franz Duy read in the Maim Street Methodist church at New Albany on Saturday, August 3. Miss Jensen is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Lester Jensen of 2819 Charleston road, New Albany, and Mr. Duy is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Duy of Cleveland, 0., former Syracuse residents. Three white ceramic vases of pompons and white mums, two < pair of seven branched candelabra bearing lighted cathedral tap- 1 ers, and many Kentia palms form- < ed the altar setting. Tall double i tapers were tied to the pews with : white satin bows and gladioli 1 formed an aisle of light. The white kneeling bench and a wtiite aisle carpet were laid for the candle- i light ceremony. Hill, organist, also sorority sister of : the bride; and Miss Jeannine Linderman, flutist. Rev. J. D. Kavich received the exchange of double ring vows. Robert Wolter of New Chicago,. fraternity brother of the bridegroom, performed the duties of best man. The guests were ushered by Melvin Jensen, brother of the bride; Richard McCauley of Arcadia; Dale Cochard, Auburn; and Gene Baugh, Greensburg, fraternity brothers of Mr. Duy. . Carrying the ring on a white satin pillow was Carl Duy, brother of the bridegroom. Bride’s Gown Pure Silk Escorted to the altar by her father, the bride was attractively attired in a full length gown of pure silk trimmed with Alencon lace appliques re-embroidered with seed pearls and aurora crystals accenting the molded bodice fashioned with .a scalloped Sabrina neckline and bouffant skirt. The long . sleeves tapered to bQdal points , over the hands. Tiny self covered i buttons extended fpom the neck- • line to the waistline at the back. The bouffant skirt featured appliques and formed three rows of scalloped Alecon lace swept into a circular train. Her bouffant veil of imported French illusion was caught gracefully to a Swedish crown fashioned with lace appliques identical with those on the gown. The bride carried a white Bible centered with a white orchid surrounded by orchids and stepanotis. White satin streamers tied in lovers’ knots trailed from the arrangement. Wedding Party Miss Kathleen Bolin of Indianapolis, a sorority sister and college roommate of the bride, was maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Miss Erika Duy of Cleveland, sister of the bridegroom; Miss Gebrgann Carpenter and Miss Vickie Merritt, both from New Albany. A floor length gown of lavendar silk organza was Worn by the bride’s honor attendant and blue silk organza was worn by the bridesmaids. Styled alike, the dresses featured scooped necklines, elbow length sleeves, and bell shaped skirts. A circular panel in front was caught with two bows of silk organza. Completing their attire were picture hats of the same color and material as their dresses, satin slippers and sterling silver necklaces, gifts of the bride. They carried cascade bouquets of miniature rosebuds and mums. The flowergirl, Lisa Zeller, wore a lavender silk organza floor length dress. She carried a basket with rosebuds and rose petals. Mrs. Jensen appeared at the church for her daughter’s wedding wearing a blue lace and crystalllette dress with a black net hat and shoes. A white orchid corsage ‘ marked the shoulder line. sories. Her cosrage was also of white orchids. Reception Follows Approximately 300 guests were received at the reception held in the church annex. Hostesses were Miss Leta Snider, Mrs. Morris Wade and Mrs. William Kessler, all cousins of the bride. Mrs. James T? Nelson, aunt of the bride, cut the wedding cake. She was assisted by Mrs. Orlan Carpenter. The tables at the reception were designed by Mrs. Julian Beard. - The wedding cake centered the table laid with an organdy gathered Skirt lined with" pink. Surrounding the cake were tiny pink roses and ivy. All the accessories on the table were oF’milk glass. A 1963 graduate of Ball State Teachers college, the bride is a member of Sigma Kappa Social sorority and Phi Upsilon Omicron home economics honorary. Mr. Duy was graduated from Syracuse high school in 1960 and is a senior at Ball State where he is a member of Theta Chi fraternity. Mrs. Duy is employed at Ball Memorial hospital as an assistant dietitian in training. Mr. Duy is employed in the student center. Following their wedding trip ’ Mr. and Mrs. Duy are at home at 217% north Tally street, Muncie. Attending the wedding from Syracuse were Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Hoopingarner and family and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Morris. Syracuse Goodwill H. D. Club Has Meeting And Family Night The Syracuse Goodwill Home Demonstration club met Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 9, in the House of Friendship. Miss Blanche Kline, vice president, opened the meeting with the pledge to the flag and the club creed. The group sang the song of the month, “Let There be Peace on Earth,” and several other songs. Mrs. Elmer Baugher was at the piano. Mrs. Glenn Popenfoose gave the meditation using two poems, “Autumn Gold” and “When John Put up the Stove”. Mrs. Eldred Mabie ’ gave the health and safety lesson . on “Diabetes”. . ' i Roll call response was “A Hals loween Prank- I Recall”. The proi ject lesson “Christmas Workshop” ■ was given by Mrs. Blanche Kline. ■ Several members plan to attend Achievement Day at Warsaw on ! October 16.? The meeting closed with the club prayer song.
