Line of r 1 Syracuse, recently departed with the 25th division, 35th infantry for Thailand. Officials of the four schools in the Lakeland Community School Corporation will participate in fire drills during National Fire Prevention week. Tiny Soule of Lake Wawasee has accepted a position as sales representative with McCormickCutter, Inc, Church of God ministers and their families from over the state met recently at Bear lake for their annual picnic. Rev. B. T. Yeager attended from Syracuse. FIVE YEARS AGO Three Syracuse Boy Scouts were awarded Scouting’s highest rank, the Eagle badge. They were Jack Ridings, John Lantz, and Dennison Miller. The town board proposes to purchase the Hoopengarner property on Main street which includes the garage building used by the fire department and the residence. Mrs. Dale Allen, who recently moved to Syracuse from Sweetsers, was guest of honor at a morning coffee given by Mrs., Dean Pittman at her Syracuse lake home. The Jonah club fish fry will be held at Oakwood Park hotel on Oct. 3. This fish fry is sponsored by the Syracuse Church of God. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Miles were in northern Michigan over the week end visiting with relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bushong will leave Sunday for several days in northern Michigan. Mrs. Velma Robbins of Trenton, N. Y., and Mrs. Gertrude Provost of Morrisville, Pa., arrived Wednesday to spend a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Arnold; Pfingst. TEN YEARS AGO The regular meeting of the WCTU was held with Mrs. Lydia Doardorff and Mrs. Ethel Guy. Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Dean of Goshen announce the birth of a son, John William. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dean of Syracuse are the grandparents. Last Friday morning a 28- lb. catfish was caught by Mrs. Fred Searfoss while she was fishing at Tippecanoe lake. Charles C. Denton were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Searfoss in Auburn. Mrs. Willard Elkins is spending two weeks visiting in the homes of her daughters, Mrs. W. R. Thompson near Logansport and Mrs. Milton Rush, at Louisville, Ky. TWENTY YEARS AGO Miss Mary Frances Cutter became the bride of Kenneth Willard on Wednesday. The ceremony was by candlelight at 8 p. m. in the Syracuse Methodist church. The Republicans selected their ticket for the November 2 election. It is as follows: First ward, Fielden Sharp; second ward, Floyd Brower; third ward, Wade Zerbe; and town clerk-treasurer, Ernest O. Buckholz. Moses Ryman is a patient at the McDonald hospital in Warsaw. The Syracuse street department has just finished the work of repairing most of the gravel covered streets in town. Mrs. Ernest Bushong, and Mrs. Ralph Thornburg entertained at a one o’clock luncheon in' honor of Mrs. M. M. Smith and her daughter, Mrs. John Pettit. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Disher and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Kline were in Gary on Tuesday. FIFTY YEARS AGO Captain A. M. Jones has sold six lots at Jones landing, including the Jones hotel.
